What did I just listen? This book was not for me... I didn't like the way women are described and used jn this book. You are always keep in the edge asking yourself when she will be sexually abuse... Worse thing is, there are parts I enjoyed in the book but I cannot get over the violence, rape, Stockholm syndrome, abuse and misogyny.

Compelling world building, character dev is wayyyyy too slow for me— hate feeling like I don’t even know the MC after ~300pgs of first person narration

So yeah, still unsure with Auren. Lots of potential but got little to nothing after a lot of on page time together. Very show don’t tell with her development but I want more what’s going through her head.

i had put off reading this book for a long time, simply because i didn’t think i’d be interested, but i was so very wrong. i will say it does start out blandly in the beginning, yet picks up quickly. my interest was fully piqued by page 50 and now i can’t wait to read the rest of the series. i would have rated it 5 stars if it wasn’t for the ridiculous amount of world building and the absolute monsters that were most of the male characters.

Big content warning for sexual content and SA on page. If I hadn’t purchased this book on audible, I probably would have DNFed. I do see the potential, but my negatives far outnumbered that potential.

All the rest of this is major spoilers. I didn’t like how it started with an *rgy, and Auren is being forced to watch from her cage… but it was very confusing how she felt about it. Seemed like she didn’t like it, then it seemed like she did, but then it seemed like she didn’t because she wished to participate… confusing. But, somehow we are supposed to believe that King Midas loves the MC Auren… no. The whole concept of the “saddles” …barf. Then, oh Midas has a wife an hour and a half in that we haven’t heard about till this point. So not only is he massively sleeping around in front of the person that loves him and that he supposedly loves, but he also has a wife that is completely fine with him stepping out and even “purchased” him some of his “saddles” …again barf. And then left and right Auren is about to be r*ped by some gross man… why. Then, Auren watched another woman get r*ped when she could have stopped it the whole time and only stops it when that man is about to come for her… like wtf?!

If I continue the series, which right now doesn't seem promising, it will only be for Rip.

I found this book to be incredibly slow and a bit redundant to be honest. Also, it was just a bit too focused on SA and demeaning women for me. I know that’s a major part of the plot line but it really just got to be way too much. There wasn’t really a lot of character progression or depth beyond Auren and the other saddles being abused. The woman can’t seem to catch a break, king Midas sucks and most of the men are garbage. Really confused by the hype about this series but maybe it gets better?

Great start to the series, I was emotionally invested in the characters and I did not find it to be predictable at all. It was also an easy read, I read it in one day and did not feel bored of it. It is a reflection of what it feels to be a woman when misogyny is still very much present. I am looking forward to see how female friendships grow stronger and what the rest of the plot looks like.

“Why am I so cursed to endure the greed of men? Is it simply the gild of my skin? Or is it something more, something deeper […]”

“Rissa, who would’ve performed and taken everything he threw at her like a professional, because that’s how strong she is.”

“But memory and time aren’t friends […] always losing one as you go with the other.”
