A challenging book, that explains complex emotions in beautiful language. Shown and not told how Esther was feeling. She's horrible for most of the time, but I still find myself rooting for her. You're really in her headspace. Very forward thinking for the 60s and some of the commentary is still incredibly relevant, espcially around women's roles in modern society. The graphic scenes and racism meant that I can't give it 5 stars, but it's a story that will always stay with me.

I found this story so confusing. It's told in vignettes, so it's unclear how much time passes between each chapter. The writing is quite lyrical but again, I felt utterly confused most of the time. The main character is deeply unlikable, her inner monologue is cruel and selfish - but nothing really happens (at least up until the point I finally gave up). If you like plot this is not your book. I tried to force myself to listen to this because it's a classic, but life's too short to read stuff you hate
