As a “prequel” A Shadow in the Ember is great for people who want to know more about the lore of the From Blood and Ash series. I read it after reading TWOTQs and I don’t know that there is much difference compared to if i had read it before TWOTQs. I found that Sera’s character was thoroughly more enjoyable than Poppy but I also understand why Poppy is the way she is in From Blood and Ash.

Definitely builds off of From Blood and Ash. You can definitely read it as a stand alone though. I like Sera better than Poppy by far. She's much more analytical and calculating. She's a few years older than Poppy too, which helps.
Something that I like is that there are consequences to actions. Forgiveness is not easily won and you have to work for it. It will be interesting to see how things progress from here.

So fun!!! I loved it just as much as FBAA. I definitely thought it was a stand-alone prequel but it’s the first in a prequel series.
