Nikhil Out Loud by Maulik Pancholy

This book is extremely timely, while also addressing issues that don't get mentioned much in kids books (the deepening of children's voices).

The protest of Nikhil being the lead in the show when he is gay absolutely echos book censoring in public schools and the LGBTQ+ protests, and it honestly never occurred to me to think of how difficult it would be for child actors when their voices change and they 'age' out of roles.

I loved this book so much! It was so lovely and touched on so many emotions. It made me cry as an adult who had a not great relationship with my father. I’m sure it speaks volumes for all the kids trying to find representation for themselves as well.

A hopeful, if verging on idealistic/unrealistic at times, story of growing up and learning to open up.

The cover design of the cute Nikhil will draw the attention of upper elementary / middle grade readers. But beyond the drawing, this novel brings to light how young humans deal with their identities and combat those that are vehemently against them. This is dealt in a way that most middle schoolers can understand & relate to - moving to a new environment, aging grandparents, making new friends & sprinkled with theater / voice acting. I wish we got a little more of the voice acting side & expanded some more on some side characters.

This was very cute, but it feels almost utopic that Nikhil could get this sort of community support when this reader is living in Moms for Liberty's backyard; in a state that is passing vile anti-trans bills.
