I picked up The Girl Upstairs because the concept seemed intriguing, an interesting way to explore the theme of anonymous urban isolation through a thriller. But what starts off as an engaging and sensitive mystery soon unravels in the second half. It's one of those books with several great ideas, but it lacks momentum and a satisfying resolution.

That said, as a debut novel, there is some promise here, and I'd be interested to see how Lees' writing develops in the future.

*Thank you to Netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review*

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Girl Upstairs was a fun mystery to jump into. Even though things were definitely sad and depressing at times, the mystery was still lurking behind and around all of that. It also doesn't help that we have no idea what we can even trust because Suzie was so freaking unreliable. Honestly, I was dazed and confused with what was happening and had so many questions on top of that.

Now, of course, it seems kind of obvious that Suzie has gone through something traumatic. Or at least that's what I was hoping for since the girl was coping with alcohol a lot. Then there's a weird obsession with the upstairs neighbor that just intrigued me. Not sure how she knows so much about her because I know absolutely nothing about my neighbors. Unless you count how many times they slam their doors throughout the day? Spoiler, it's a high number.

Things step up, mystery wise, when she realizes that something is wrong when Emily's apartment is dead quiet. The twists and turns throughout this book were good. Some were a little predictable, but I didn't see them all coming. Still the slow burn of it all kept the pages turning and I just wanted to see how things were going to end.

Overall, this definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. I'm so happy that I got the chance to jump into this book and can't wait for the next thriller Georgina writes!

3.5 stars.

the first half of this book was....not good. the main character was annoying as all hell. i stuck around because i was curious about some of the back-story and i'm kinda glad i did because i enjoyed the latter half quite a bit once the story picked up and i got some justification for the main girls behavior.

i also noticed at some point that 90% of the characters in this book were blonde and once i noticed i couldn't stop noticing which probably shouldn't have bothered me but it did. can we throw in a ginger or something next time please.

overall not bad. i was looking for a decent thriller and i got a decent thriller. will probably give the authors next book a try too.

I think that I have read just about every book with "girl" in the title so when I saw this ARC on Netgalley I wanted to read it.

The beginning, where we meet Suzie and her upstairs loud neighbor Emily was a bit jumbled. Somewhat confusing because we really do not learn all that much about Suzie other than she has suffered something to make her somewhat homebound and unhappy. Little things set her off, especially the noises of her upstairs neighbor.

As the story progressed it began to come together and it was well paced and I pretty much read it all in one sitting. Other than the very start I felt it worked well with the back and forth and seeing the same scenes from different perspectives was very helpful.

I did not figure it out at all!

Thank you to #Netgalley for the ARC of The Girl Upstairs by Georgina Lee in exchange for a review.
