I've been waxing poetic about the democratic nature (and power) of libraries for years, so I knew before opening this book that I'd probably love it. And I did! It braided together an excellent analysis of public space, social infrastructure, and resiliency along with compelling narratives about real people and places. My personal favorite page of the book is 225 which cites the Columbus Metropolitan Library as an example of library leadership in the community, home town pride was at an all time high!!

Interesting, but not sure it fully lived up to its subtitle - it felt a bit surface level.

I enjoyed this, but the evidence moves from studies with control groups to anecdotal stories as the book progresses.
It's obviously an area that needs more investigation to understand the effects and what qualities affect its impact-- What if the space is run down? What if the library offers health services as well? What if the park has paid sessions?
I was happy to see that it didn't try to monetise the impact. Benefits can be felt, and measured, without giving it a £
