I was so onboard with this in the opening chapters, but
once the romantic angle with the police chief became elevated from a minor thread to a major storyline, the book lost a bit of its sparkle. I was more interested in the mystery and the lead without the romance angle, but I can see how others would love the whole package.

I'm joining those who mentioned that this book is dragged, long, boring, repetitive.

No one cares or is interested to know when the dog is moving, looking, whining, breathing. There are backstories to backstories. There are too many characters who are just there to repeat the insignificant thing 100 times.

Not worth reading.

Seemed like an on-theme read for a mini vacation to door county. Probably wouldn’t have picked this up otherwise. It was a cute, cozy read with lots of historical/factual tidbits that I enjoyed as a native Wisconsinite, but did at times take me out of the story. What I couldn’t get past was the absolutely abysmal dialogue and clunky writing. Everything was over explained, even down to the main character’s bathroom usage at one point. I found myself skimming the pages just to get through it from about halfway on. I wanted to like this more but I don’t think l’ll read the following books in this series. Womp womp.
Also I was hoping that one of the murderers would be Morgan’s ex-fiance! But no :/

I'm always on the lookout for mysteries that span the gap between cozy and thriller. That's my sweet spot, and it's hard to find. I read both sub-genres but especially like the ones that are not too sweet and not too scary. I thought Ryan's new series might fit that need, but it's definitely on the side of cozy.

I liked the premise and the setting, but found the book overly long and the heroine to be bland and two-dimensional. And sadly, it fell into that old-fogie-cozy trap that makes me crabby. I am very happy to read books written by older authors. But when the heroine is supposed to be 30-ish and she sounds 70, I find myself continually popped out of the story by her stilted old-fashioned dialogue. And too many cozies have this problem. Do authors not understand that they can't just label their MCs with a specific age, that they also need to sound and act as though they are that age? [/rant]
