Really unexpected tone/subject after the last Lily King book I read, but I loved this one. Powerful sense of time & place, compelling emotional characters, and heart wrenching end.

This was an interesting read about the world of anthropology in the mid-20th century when anthropology was starting to really spread. It is fictional but feels as if it was based on real people and real places.
I didn't enjoy the love triangle part of it, but I liked the alternating perspectives and the unusual plot lines.

Beautiful, heartbreaking. Written with care. The characters felt real, their desires and thoughts real. One of my favorites.

I loved this book...anthropologists, native sex rituals, love triangles, women disparaging their husbands. Once again I picked the book that's historical fiction based on the true life of a famous woman, but the names have been changed and the story lines are altered from true accounts. And once again I asked the question... How true was this RE-LLY? So frustrating! The book could have been longer, 250 pages is barely a novel. At times I forgot the first person was the third man, not the woman, who was the true main character. That perspective was highly original and super writing.

I loved this book - so evocative and descriptive of what it’s like to find one’s flow state doing a job you love. I thought the depictions of the characters were excellent and loved the telling of a story of how social anthropology developed as a social science. A great feminist heroine at the centre of it all and I was hooked. Devoured it in a day!
