At times, very clever and entertaining. Mostly? The recipes impeded every story and I just got bored, sadly.

Had this on my cookbook shelf probably since it was re-issued in the 80s, am only now reading it, as I just finished the autobiography. A worthy companion piece.

I adored this book as much for recipes and memoir, as for the peek into a bygone way if cooking which includes things like braised pigeon, and cooking on an asbestos mat(!). I have yet to try a recipe, but there are several I'm itching to try. My only criticism it that the recipes are poorly laid out.

A delightful glimpse into the home life of Gertrude Stein and Alice B Toklas through the lens of food. Charmingly dated in parts, less charmingly so in others, it spans two world wars and the intervening years. Be prepared for queer erasure and racism.
