A lively light read with likable characters and a fun plot. The book also moves along at a nice pace so some of the dithering that is done doesn't annoy which probably would have happened if the book had really drawn things out. It also has a good supporting cast that suitable makes you interested to read the rest of the books in the series.

I received an eARC at no cost from the author, and I am leaving a voluntary and honest review. Thank you.

Maybe I wasn’t in the right state of mind to read this book. It just didn’t do it for me.

Right from the beginning, I felt everything was a bit forced, a bit too much. That “I want to jump in your pants right away, even if you don’t treat the best” (the hero does improve later on, just to be clear).

I didn’t connect with the characters. The only ones I liked were the girls from the school, and I have a very, very slight curiosity regarding the other ladies that opened the school with with the countess (the heroine of this book).

It took me quite a bit of time to read it, simply because every time I went to pick it up I just dreaded it.

It wasn’t poorly written, and the plot did have some interesting touches, but it just didn’t captivate me.

I voluntarily read and review an advance copy of this book. All thought and opinions are my own.

The Earl Next Door by Amelia Grey will be available for purchase 5-28-19. This debut novel in the First Comes Love series kept my attention and has the next two stories on my To Be Read list. I enjoyed reading about characters who, while young in age, were not silly nor innocent. A confirmed bachelor, looking for love, and a young widow, definitely not interested in matrimony, become neighbors and get to know each other by virtue of geography. While there's an instant attraction there is also common sense. Look before you leap. I liked that about the plot. Of course that went out the window when the heat was turned up.

Widow Adeline, Dowager Countess of Wake and her friends opening a boarding school of any kind was a bold move. Society frowned on so many things it's a wonder they weren't tarred and feathered. Doing so in St. James, next door to an Earl no less, was a terrific way to throw the characters together. Acceptance, by members of the ton, of a small solution to the plight of the less fortunate...well it's a miracle. The Earl of Marksworth goes through a fundamental change to his lifestyle. On one hand it's what he wants and on the other it's definitely not.

I do recommend giving this story a read, it's refreshing. The next two books in the series will be Gone With The Rogue and How to Train Your Earl. I love the titles! Happy summer reading.

I loved this book! It is the first book in the First Came Love series and it did a great job pulling readers in and making them want to read the next books. The series is based on three widows who lost their husbands on the ship, Salty Dove. The book was entertaining, well written and caught my attention. I loved the characters. Lyon showed such patience with Adeline as she overcame her weariness of remarrying. The children’s antics made the book humorous and I was not expecting it. Overall I would say a great book to a wonderful series.

Too insta-lovely (and I don’t always mind insta-love!) and the ending was too predictable. Just an ok read.

Adelaide is a widow who has a school for girls in her backyard. Well, she will soon have a school.

Her first meeting with Lyon was hilarious, and tsk Lyon, Lyon. The neighborhood was gossiping what on earth was going on in her backyard.

She is a happy widow, and Lyon gets on her nerves. There is banter, there is being annoyed, there is attraction building. But she does not want another bad marriage, and he wants someone to love. Not to love for a moment.

Cute story, they get their hea.

This is a quick read about a widow who keeps running into her neighbor in the most inappropriate ways. You can fly through the book fairly quickly and it will keep you entertained throughout. Nothing spectacular, but a fun and enjoyable read.

RATING: 4 STARS
2019; St. Martin's Paperbacks/St. Martin's Press

When Adeline becomes a widow, after being in a loveless marriage, she vows to remain one. Lyon is a bachelor looking for love before marriage. When the two end up living next door to one another sparks fly, but will wedding bells ring?

From page one, the opening scene when the hero and heroine meet, I was in for the romance ride. They have chemistry and banter - which is my yardstick for romances - and it climbs as the story continues. There isn't anything new/unique with this couple or romance, but it was the predictability that I needed. I enjoyed the series arc of three widows opening a boarding school for daughters and sisters of men who died in the same sea accident their husbands died in. The young girls and older ladies provide some of the more humourous and heartwarming moments. Two young friends Fanny and Mathilda are the cutest! The cast of secondary characters are great - with Lyon's father, Aunt and her homebound friend to Adeline's household. I am in for rest of the series and may need to add Grey to my list of "Authors to Read".

Three and three quarter stars. The story was sweet and the premise was adorable. The pacing just felt really off, you couldn’t tell of hours, days, or weeks pass then it’s basically stated a month or so later later in the book and it was like wait what? Book would’ve been amazing if there was more substance to it.
