Having read the fourth in this series, I wasn't sure how much I would like this one but it was just as gripping as the other that I've read. It also has the sense of a slow burning cozy mystery with all of the characters following the traditional roles and requirements of society, mostly anyway and I love Annie's character even more as this includes her first interactions with and views of Nate and her determination to keep herself separated from her husband's debts, despite a pushy and intimidating debt collector's best efforts.

This was one of my holiday reads and although I wasn't expecting much from it found myself drawn in to the story and rooting for Annie fairly quickly. The plot was well written and there a few good red herrings before the murderer became obvious.
The historical aspect of the book was well done with lovely descriptions of the city of San Francisco and the author was also able to give readers an insight into some of the societal and political views of the time without distracting from the main plot.
Personally I found the heroine Annie Fuller to be a very likable character even if her romance with young lawyer did feel a little heavy handed at times I will definitely be looking out for more of this series.

I was disappointed in this book. The "mystery" wasn't much of a mystery to me. It was obvious to me from the beginning who-dun-it. I prefer a mystery to unfold through the action of the story. There just seemed to be an awful lot of time spent with the Annie and Nate sitting around and speculating. This book was just OK.

Mysteries are not my favorite genre. In fact this is only the second I've ever read (not sure I finished the first one - many many years ago.
While I dont care for the suspense - which I experience as stress... this book was okay. A good story... good ending - great wrap-up... worth the read - and probably more so if you enjoy these kinds of puzzles.

Murder mystery meets romance in Victorian San Francisco? Sure, sign me up!
Annie Fuller, 26, is already a widow. After a terrible marriage that ended in bankruptcy, she lives quite happily as the owner of a little boarding house. As a side hustle she pretends to be a clairvoyant to give financial advice. When one of her clients turns up dead, missing assets and stocks, she decides to get involved. Drama ensues.
A cozy little mystery that I thoroughly enjoyed. I did have it narrowed down to two people pretty early on but I was still invested. The love story isn't over-the-top, love at first sight. Annie and Nate had cute interactions. Id likely read it again, and I'd love to read the others.

I got this book as an Amazon freebie and it was just pure happenstance that I opened it to read it as I had a few choices. I was expecting a seedy romance novel with a bit of mystery because the furthest I read into the description only mentioned late 19th century San Francisco. I was pleasantly surprised by the protagonist, a strong woman in an era where women were hobbled. I loved the book and immediately started on its sequel. Totally recommend.
