The writing, grammar, punctuation and pacing = abysmal. Don’t get me started on how inconsistent every single one of these characters were. Mae is absolutely insufferable and she has zero redeeming qualities. She continues to go around the town telling every single person whose life was ruined by Paul that she doesn’t think he deserved to die and she confused they won’t give her the time of day? The irony is she keeps saying she doesn’t actually know the kind of man Paul was, so wouldn’t it be entirely possible that he maybe deserved to die? How does she know that he wasn’t a murderer or something worse? In her words, she didn’t even know the real him! she was given detailed information time and time again he was not only a bad person, but the worst person any of these people has ever known. is she just stupid or what does she not understand about that? She’s giving him the benefit of the doubt because he took her on nice vacations and she always had her nails done? I think horrible things can happen to anybody no matter how much money you have, but this character made me have zero sympathy for a person with extreme amounts of privilege. welcome to the real world you insensitive spoiled dummy sorry you can’t go to the spa four times a week.

ALSO it was brought up multiple times that she wasn’t a “gold digger” and was independent and on her own for many years before she met him so how the hell would she not know how to do laundry? Stupidity just for the sake of stupidity and it pissed me off.

Lame characters, lame story 2 stars

Fun cozy camping mystery with delightful small-town characters!
After reading “Beaches, Bungalows & Burglaries,” the first in the “Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery” series, I can see why author Tonya Kappes is so popular among mystery readers. Right away, I am taken into the story of Mae West (as she says, not the actress) meeting with her attorney after her husband has been locked away for defrauding investors. She is used to the upper crust lifestyle. Now she is shocked when her attorney tells her that the only assets left are a yellow camper and a rundown campground in a small town with the wonderful name of Normal, Kentucky. Yes, she must drive this camper from the East Coast to Normal. No more luxury autos for her. At the campground, Mae is utterly out of her element. Fortunately, the friendly and often eccentric characters in Normal’s laundromat are there to help. But chaos strikes when a body floats up from under the campground’s rotted pier! And why did the FBI show up? I absolutely loved taking a break from the “normal” world to spend time with Mae and the delightful folks in Normal, Kentucky. Ms. Kappes’s dialogue sparkles on the page. Highly recommended for cozy mystery lovers. Wonderful audiobook narration by voice actress Johanna Parker of Tantor Audio.

the characters are cool, general plot is good for the series, 1st book was lacking on the mystery part but that gets better as the series goes. Biggest issue is continuity from book to book. The narrator for the audio book is pretty good.

I was looking for a cozy mystery but this story isn’t the one for me.
As someone actually born and raised in the deep south, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop with the overly welcoming ladies of Normal, Kentucky. I briefly wondered if the townsfolk had worked together to dispatch Ponzi Paul themselves! I kept waiting for the stench of Mae’s camper to be some important, hidden piece of evidence. But, no, just a reminder that Mae needs to clean her camper.

Our main character didn’t even manage to riddle out the killer themselves!

Maybe I should look for less “cozy” and more “mystery” going forward…

This book was a good read with two good twists in it that kept me reading. If you watch Hallmark movies and mysteries this book reminds me of those in a sense. Good PG mystery that kept me hooked & seeing the potential romantic endeavors of the main character also brings me back. Already downloaded the next in the series! I’m also a sucker for a series.
