This was a personal 5-star read for me, meaning: were there problems? Sure. Was it a perfect work of art? Definitely not. Did I giggle and kick my feet and stay up late and wake up early to read this? 100%. I just thoroughly and completely enjoyed myself reading this book. I loved Hunter and Demi, I loved their friends-to-lovers arc, I loved their actual relationship and how they were so damn horny for each other. I just loved everything. I also appreciate Elle Kennedy’s obvious efforts to diversify her books. (The “It’s complicated” in diversity is because Demi and other new characters are diverse, but of course the other characters are white because they’re all from the earlier books. So good progress is being made, but we’re not all the way there yet.)
Honestly, I feel like I kind of said everything in that first paragraph😂 The sexual tension and then sexual payoff in this book was sublime. And I loved getting to know Hunter better; he actually might be one of my favorite leading men now. Dean is my other favorite. And Jake. Maybe I just have a thing for players… Anyway, Demi is also super amazing. I thought her interest in psychology was so fun and I loved how she could be both fiery and reserved. Women contain multitudes!
Anyway, if you’re going to read any of the Briar U series, read this one. (Or The Risk🤪)

This was a good story! I think I’m still coming down from the High of Brenna and Jake in The Risk though because I didn’t love Demi and Hunter as much. I love how Elle Kennedy doesn’t just write a sexy romance, but also has really good character development.

I absolutely adore how seamlessly I transitioned into reading this book from the prior one in the series. Seeing the setup to the payoff in this book was so freaking fun! The relationship between the two main characters was great because it really was built as a friendship and it evolved. These characters both push each other to be better, more confident versions of themselves and played a fun game of toeing the line between friendship and more. I also loved the introduction of a female character that was not already hockey acquainted or hockey adjacent and seeing how she fit into this world.

I just have to say I’m a huge fan of how this book touched on what some may perceive as ”unconventional” sexual dynamics including nods to open relationships, threesomes, and exhibitionism. Not to mention just the spiciness of Hunter and Demi’s sex scenes! Their chemistry is off the charts hot and the tension was so strong given the circumstances too!

Omg! This book! I love Demi! I love Hunter! Nico’s a bitch! It’s sooo good!! I loved the mental health aspect of it, with their school project, & the twist at the end. I think Elle wrote about the issues very well, & I think Demi would make an expert therapist! I just couldn’t get enough of this book or their stories!!!
&&& the shocker in the epilogue!!! Omg! I can’t say I didn’t see that coming, but I’m still amazed it actually happened!! lol
I’m convinced at this point that anything Elle Kennedy writes will be a 5 star read for me, especially if it’s a hockey romance!! lol

This book was fun to read. The characters Hunter and Demi had a great chemistry. Their banter was fun to read. Fast paced and pretty interesting character development.

Honestly, not my favourite but enjoyable nonetheless. I found The Play a little predictable and a bit slow but, like all Elle Kennedy books, it was fun, flirty and touching.

I also went into The Play not liking Hunter and now I love him so success!
