Compared even to Authority, especially to Annihilation, I was really disappointed. The theme of the book is even enough to gather, and that lends itself well to a sort of anti-climax, of course. But it comes off preachy, lethargic, and esoteric. Vandermeer spent a lot of time creating a special kind of dread that just... well, is, thank you very much.

Perhaps, years from now, I will come back to this series and see that it truly was a masterpiece, and see all the motifs and themes I missed because it was an audiobook. But for now, the sinner shall rejoice, for there is no sin in light or in darkness that the seeds of the dead cannot forgive.

This was quite the conclusion to the series!  It moved faster than the second one and I think the last few pages were about as poetic as it could possibly be!  Straight up beautiful language and made me want to go outside and just stand in the salty sea-breeze air on the beach.  I don't think this one was as creepy as the first two though that scene in the diner with Saul is definitely terrifying.

“It is winter in Area X, the mysterious wilderness that has defied explanation for thirty years, rebuffing expedition after expedition, refusing to reveal its secrets. As Area X expands, the agency tasked with investigating and overseeing it--the Southern Reach--has collapsed on itself in confusion. Now one last, desperate team crosses the border, determined to reach a remote island that may hold the answers they've been seeking. If they fail, the outer world is in peril.”

Ah, the creation of Area X gets analyzed. I finally get some answers!

Acceptance follows the stories of the first 2 books, so don’t read this one without reading those. As with the prior two books, I found myself loving the world that was created and hating the POV I had to read through.

Vandermeer’s characters are 1 dimensional at best and annoying to say the least. They ramble, have no individuality, or apparently drive to do a single thing. Maybe this is because of the world they enter, a side effect of Area X, maybe? Still, the people needed to be more. This is the biggest flaw. The story itself is a strong one, and a great one. But, you have to get past who you’re reading through, and sadly, most can’t.
