Pretty slow start, but the last third really picks up.

Loving this series so far! The characters, the sense of time and place, feel so evocative. This is a crime/thriller series but the most interesting part is Cash herself. It's a great character study. An independent woman who is very much herself, yet also missing a large part of herself due to growing up without her heritage. She has no real family or friends, other than the sheriff who saved her from an abusive foster family. She just exists; someone who is so lonely they don't even know they're lonely. This paints a real picture of why Indigenous children shouldn't be separated from their culture, without taking away from the story with a too heavy-handed Message.

And despite her tragic start in life, Cash is not a downbeat character to read about at all. She's hardworking and (mostly) on a good path in life. Partly due to Sheriff Wheaton's help, and a lot due to her own sense of justice and survival. I'm so excited to keep following her journey, personal and professional. I feel like every book is going to offer a bit of growth and discovery, a "better late than never" of finding who she really is.
