A magical, dreamy little book that packs so much into so little.

The word "moon" is used no less than 500 times in this 100 page novella and that seems excessive.

read the book because billlie's "enchanted night ~ white night" was inspired by it, specifically and only
the part about summer storm and the girls going into ppl's houses
. the rest of the book aside from that part was really not enjoyable. I wanted to find the artistry in the storylines that were being described, especially laura's and danny's, but they were just really fucking creepy and weird. would love to read more about what the author was trying to say with this but i think the objectification of several of the girls (and the guys actually!!) made it hard to appreciate the enchanting magic of the moonlight. i did really love some of the prose, millhauser obviously knows how to write, but again, all very heavily outweighed by the unnecessary creepiness.

I didn't hate it and there were some parts that were nice to read but mostly it kind of fell flat. I kind of feel like millhauser read a midsummer nights dream and said "let me try that" but the modern-day, real-life elements kind of diluted the idea. The concept of the book was so intriguing to me because I loved the idea of like a moonlit summer night's fever dream come to life, but the only story that I felt portrayed that properly was the one with the lovers in the spruces. Like the idea that daylight might steal whatever happens in the night from reality and trying to savor it. I get that. This also felt oddly sexually charged when it didn't need to be at times and soooo hyperfixated on moonlight (which again, I like the sentiment of that but it was too overt, like more subtlety would be nice) anyway! I like the inquiry into what happens when the world sleeps and the dreamers walk the streets, but I think it could've had better delivery.

When Anne Lamott said to write from a one inch picture frame, I think this book is what she meant. The beautifully developed characters' actions took me in surprising directions. I loved the short inserted segments of the stuffed animals in the attics coming alive to perform their own tragic love story. There are candy flavored character descriptions that are so subtle and concise. I wouldn't take this book on a vacation, because you may not want the distractions, but I would read this in my armchair near the fireplace.
