This is a quick, easy read - filled with humor, anecdotes and the insights of a boy become man, a musician become legend. It's a look into the mind of a humble genius.

You don't need to be a Beatle's fan to enjoy this, but it doesn't hurt. These short little snippet stories and poems are offbeat and humorous. There are also little pictures to enjoy as you read (all created by Mr. L himself.) With titles like "Treasure Ivan" and lines like "I wandered happy as a jew," it is an interesting short read at the very least.

Oh John (or #jawn if you have the misfortune of following me on Tumblr), how I love to hate you and hate to love you.

Honestly, I surprised myself by even picking this up considering he's my least favorite Beatle, but on my never ending quest to absorb as much Beatle knowledge and material as possible, I figured I'd give this a quick read.

I think the part I liked most about this little...whatever you'll call it, was Paul's (#pol, again for the Tumblr reference) introduction. He prefaces this mishmash of words and drawings with the simple statement that sometimes it's not supposed to make sense. It's just John's crazy (albeit sometimes genius) mind at work.

I'm sure somewhere there's a professor teaching this to a classroom full of bright-eyed creative writing freshmen who are buying the BS of "exploring your mind" and "letting go of all thoughts" but I think Paul was right, you should just take it as it is. It's John putting together a bunch of silly little stories, throwing in some drawings and capitalizing on his Beatle fame by selling a book. It's nothing more, it's nothing less.

Tactfully bizarre and nonsensical in a way that invokes the nostalgia and wonder of childish gibberish. Definitely not for everyone and definitely tailored to fans of Lennon and his style of writing, however it is still a work of art and whimsy through and through. One of a kind, just like the man who wrote it.

Oh, well. I guess the absurdist style isn't for me. I really love John, but I didn't enjoy this book at all. The stories are completely nonsense and his english is very hard to comprehend. I can see he's saying something very smart and important... But still... I don't get it. lol Maybe I should have read this with a group, or a teacher, or someone who could discuss it with me. Reading by myself was very complicated and frustrating.

If you are a Lennon fan, and can appreciate this book for what it is (often nonsensical ramblings and doodles), then you will like it.

If you are looking for insight into Lennon's genius, then you will probably be disappointed.
Although this is the nonsense behind his genius... so maybe you wont be.
