This book was definitely not what I was expecting and for sure got weird about halfway through.

You don't have to prove that you're worthy. You only have to want to try. The fire we build will be a large one, with plenty of room around it. We'll gather in our circle and join hands, and we'll dance with our imperfect bodies.

A Special Place for Women has a lot to say - about fourth-wave feminism, about sisterhood, about elitism and inclusion. I see people arguing that the book doesn't say enough about any of these things, but it hit this sweet spot for me by broaching topical subjects without being weighed down by their seriousness.

More and more as of late, my feelings about a book are dictated largely by how much fun I had with the read. A Special Place for Women was a great reading experience for me. Jillian, an unemployed journalist grieving the loss of her mother, sets her investigative sights on Nevertheless, an elite club of women that is shrouded in secrecy. The ensuing ride is entertaining, and the ending is one that satisfied me.

Also, Jillian + Raf = the human embodiment of the heart eye emoji. Seriously, I absolutely adore them. Maybe I just need to read more romances because, admittedly, I swooned.

Jillian is a reporter whose newspaper just folded. She also just lost her mom. So she's looking for a good story to give her back on her feet. There is a group of women who work together to promote ideas for women. The club is very exclusive. Jillian manages to get invited and learns that they were responsible for the most recent woman who ran for office but she fell hard. There are several members of the group but Margo and Caroline are the founding members. As it turns out, Jillian is the granddaughter of a founding member. The women use magic to get what they want and there is naked dancing in the woods. Throughout the story is a romance with her best friend as she begins to realize she has feelings for him since they are pretending to date for Jillian to gain access to the club. That was the best part of the story. In the end Jillian doesn't write the story and the women forgive her for almost outing them and burning down their club.

I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this book. Simple fiction. A bit fun. A bit wild. Nothing too serious. Interesting for the time period I'm reading it in.
