I found the pacing a little slow at first but now I can't wait to see how the story and characters keep developing in the next book. The art is gorgeous and the colour palettes are perfectly selected. I found myself caring about the characters more than I initially expected and the slow reveal of their history (no spoilers, go read it!) was so well done.
I hadn't read any of Marjorie Liu's works before this but I am keen to read Monstress soon as I really loved her storytelling coupled with Sana Takeda's art.

Self harm - a character bites their wrist and there is blood. This is not related to suicidal ideation, it is done ritualistically.marissasa's review against another edition

This graphic novel was gorgeously, creepily illustrated and excellently, hilariously written. I loved all the witty remarks from the characters and especially the sibling banter between the two twins. The art style was very unique and stylized, and everything from the color palette to the line quality gave the story a sharpness and eerie feeling lurking beneath the recognizable and mundane city backdrop I also loved the way that the notoriously demanding and cold Asian parenting style of the mother was paralleled with the issue of a non-human demon eater not knowing how to raise kids as humans and not rub off her "badness" onto them. I can't wait for the rest of this trilogy to come out!
