Another great story in the series! It started off really interesting and did slow a bit later, but was overall a great plot. I found it very interesting when Laurence had amnesia- he had to relearn of the dragons and rebuild his relationship with Temeraire. It was also very interesting to see the dragons of Russia, but it did drag a bit at the end. However, I'm excited for the next (and last) book of the series!

The book was good. The plot complicated without being difficult to follow, and there was certainly lots of adventure. The trouble was that all of the adventures were misadventures for the main characters -- one miserable event after another. It gets depressing, and after a while, a bit dull. The ending was disappointing. I knew going in that this book is one of a series, but I dislike it when an author cuts a plot off sharply, with no resolution, with the obvious intent of continuing in the next book. I'd prefer each story to stand on its own merit. I'm not more inclined to read the next installment just because this one ended unresolved and with our heroes in dire circumstances. That said, I will likely read the next one when it comes out, because the series is fun and well-written, and there's nothing else quite like it. I mean, seriously? Dragons in the Napoleonic Wars? Worth reading.

Well, I've stuck with the series for this long, so I figured I should read this one too. So now we've added Japan and China to the places this story has visited, and *sigh* I suppose it was good enough (at the end, once we got past the whole soap-opera amnesia thing) that I'll read the next one as well.
But 8 books? Really? Can we finish this already?

This book was a bit uneven for me in terms of plot, but it had some of the best character development of the series. I loved how it worked in a retrospective look at the whole series into the core narrative, with Lawrence's amnesia storyline forcing him to look back on the past eight years and grapple with the decisions he made –
when he ultimately decides to once again choose Temeraire and the Aerial Corps, and even makes peace with his decision to commit treason because it was the right thing to do, it brings his character's arc to a very satisfying conclusion and
sets up the dramatic conclusion to the series in the final book. (Also, I really liked that
it was a meeting with Tharkay, and not Temeraire, that triggered Lawrence's memory. It was just a bit of a subversion of tropes which was nice, and also underlined how Tharkay and Lawrence's relationship evolved from mutual distrust and even animosity to being such deep and trusted friends
.)
