About That Fling by Tawna Fenske

I liked this book for the first 40 pages or so. It was an interesting romance plot. Jenna needs just one night of wild abandonment. Unfortunately, her choice of fling isn't the greatest, having quite a few personal connections to herself that she doesn't realize right away. I liked this book at times. I liked Jenna and Adam at times. I really didn't like Mia, Jenna's best friend, which was a hindrance to reading the book. I felt as if Fenske put just a little too many side stories and tried too much to tie them together. The mediation stuff, dealing with Jenna and Adam's work, was a little too much for me as well. I wanted more of the main story. All in all, an okay read but I wanted more.

Ew. Started out strong but then everyone was such a hot mess by the end. I just couldn't handle the lies and the drama.

3.5 rating.

I really, really enjoyed this book... Until the end. I just felt that it was rushed and the responses weren't genuine, I know I certainly wouldn't have reacted the way Mia did. I'd be a but pissed off, scrap that, I'd be majorly pissed off. At time it felt like parts of the story weren't finished or pieces of information were just thrown in to give a bit of a plot when it eventually turned out to be nothing or it wasn't brought up again.

Take away those things and I did enjoy it. It read well and I didn't want to put it down. I would recommend this.

Sweet

It was a sweet new story. I got a bit frustrated with the Jenna. I understand that she doesn't like to hurt people, but sometimes I wanted to shake her and say grow up! No one cares. In the end it was a sweet quick read.

I enjoyed this novel for the most part. There were however a few off things that make it impossible for me to give it a higher rating. See my blog post on it to find out what those things are.

Fenske has a unique voice that combines screwball farce with thoughtful character-driven romance. Sometimes those parts don't mix well together, so you have scenes like Jenna earnestly explaining why she can't start a relationship the handsome, witty, sexy guy with whom she had a one-night stand, while the two of them are stuck in a private peep show room of an "adult pleasure" store. And the meddlesome elderly aunt who writes bestselling erotica is a character I could have lived without (we get it, old people + sex = hilarity. As I rapidly approach that age myself I find it less and less sidesplitting.) However, Fenske raises some interesting issues about how relationships begin and end, and whether people are capable of true change. I just wish she had done so with fewer dick pic jokes.

This is billed as romance, but I'm not so sure. It felt more like chick lit with (I'll admit) a few hilarious moments. Less light and fluffy than I'd expected, but quite good for what it was.

3.5 stars. Quick read, pretty predictable - but I enjoyed it! A few surprisingly thought-provoking moments regarding friendship, family & relationships, along with good humor and (slightly unrealistic but still cute) romance. The light, fun read I needed to wrap up this week/summer.
