“Near the end of this eight weeks of outpatient treatment, I was able to think. Not well, but I was able to think about trying to think, which is pretty close to thinking and less vibrating like a tuning fork.”

I have been a Maria Bamford fan since I discovered her in the 2005 comedy documentary The Comedians of Comedy. She is bizarre, hilarious, completely honest about things she should NOT be honest about, and delightfully unique. There is literally no one like her.

Her memoir is heartbreaking in her honesty about her mental health struggles. But I also laughed a lot, sometimes guffawing very loudly as I listened to the audiobook in my car. What I love about Maria is how she completely owns her white, Midwest-raised, privilege while validating that mental healthcare in this country is shitty for everyone. She knows though, and talks extensively about, how far more shitty it is for those without her privileges. She ends her book with this: “If you need help, dial 988. I know, healthcare can be super shitty. Go get yourself that shitty ass help! I love you.”

You know what? I love you too. I want you to get the help you need. Listen to Maria's book. It might help a little. It will at least make you laugh.

If you’ve seen Maria’s stand up or show and LIKED IT you’ll like this book. It’s uproarious at times and heartbreaking at others. She takes us through her highest highs and lowest lows and shares all the “secret” societies shes been a part of while navigating some serious mental health crises and the death of her mother and beloved God-pug.

She bounces around and makes it seem like you are at the desk with her writing, she uses A LOT OF CAPITAL LETTERS FOR EMPHASIS. She uses emojis and has recipes. What more could you want??

She’s just a stupid pig-lady who is taking one day at a time and I love that for her.
