A brilliant story that on the surface is about two people who can’t let go of the past but when you dig deeper is about their need to not be racist, no matter the cost. This book outlines the way that well-meaning white liberals (especially the women) make choices for and about the Black women in their lives, instead of treating those women like true equals and giving them the space to make their own choices. Reid highlights the way white people often think they know what is best or just for Black people without asking or trying to understand a different perspective while also telling a complex coming of age story filled with love and loss.

This is absolutely as good as everyone said it was! Can't wait for more from Ms. Reid. She has such a way with natural dialogue that I only dream of even approaching one day. I also really felt like the interactions between the friends felt real and authentic - the phone bowl, the secret job negotiations in a bathroom. To me, those scenes feel so true to your 20s.

This book is so so good, loved the ending personally, I felt that it started a little slow for me but after the first few pages it really picked up and I couldn’t put it down

The discussion surrounding race gripped me from start to finish. I loved this book and everything it stood for.

I agree with other reviewers that the ending was underwhelming (all the discussions the book opened were abruptly sealed), but up until the last 10 or so pages, I was extremely impressed by the complex character dynamics. I loved this.
