Jane Austen is so hilarious!!
I'm not giving it five stars because the gothic parody part was a bit boring to me and the ending didn't leave such a mark because it was told and not shown, but overall I adore Austen and her witty, brilliant mind.

Actually listened to it this time. As a mature adult I found this novel much more entertaining than when I was in college. I found myself laughing at several bits that I couldn't see the humour in as a young adult. Definitely a recommended re-read!

As I have had a string of unsatisfying books, I decided to reread some Austen, and Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were on hand at the library. My first reading I gave this four stars, and I cannot see how. My second reading of this book had me struggling to continue through Catherine, John, and Isabella's banality.

I know this is Austens shortest novel but I’m still shocked I got through it in one sitting. Older novels usually take me way longer to read but this one was fun.
The only reason this doesn’t get 5 stars from me, is because the entire time it really seemed to me that Henry was generally interested in Catherine, and then all of a sudden at the end he’s like ??? Eh I wasn’t really interested until now like what??? Homeboy was aggressively flirting with her, how gross of him.
But I love the whole trip to the Abbey and the twisted relationship between Catherine and Isabella. Regency era cattiness is superb.

Catherine cracks me up!!!! I relate to her a lot. I too read scary things and then freak myself out by imagining spooky occurrences. Her love for reading exciting, gothic novels is adorable and relatable.
My main qualm with the book is that the romance between Henry and Catherine doesn’t get to flourish much. Which I know the romance aspect was not the focus of the book, but I still wanted more!!! Jane Austen made it clear Henry only had any interest in Catherine because he knew she was very interested in him, and revered him in every sense. Not NEARLY as cute and romantic as Anne Elliot and Captain F. Wentworth. Oh well.
This is a much shorter, satirical book, so therefore less substance. But it is still a hoot n’ a half.

“A woman especially, if she have the misfortune of knowing anything, should conceal it as well as she can.”
“Henry returned to what was now his only home, to watch over his young plantations, and extend his improvements for her sake, to whose share in them he looked anxiously forward; and Catherine remained at Fullerton to cry.”
Hahahahah. Jane Austen was a funny lady.
The Mysteries of Uldolpho by Ann Radcliffe is a must read after this! I have to know what all the hype is about.

I liked Austen's humorous perspective on a proper "heroine" throughout the story, however this was not my favorite novel of hers. There is a dearth of detail, and it reads as though someone is telling a story around the fire - no details, barely any dialogue, and characters that are not well-developed.
