I enjoyed this one a lot and liked the science and art aspects of it. Unfortunately, my library doesn't have the other books in the series :(

Competent enough, but I found the two main characters nondescript and unremarkable. I got very bored at the FINALE of the plot and couldn't work up the enthusiasm to finish for over a week.

The thing that drew me in to reading this book was the setting and the dynamic between the leads, and neither of those things disappointed! Sometimes the prose got a lil flowery for the sake of being flowery, and there's nothing super revolutionary in terms of the plot per se, but it was an enjoyable read (the characters are super fun especially) and I'm genuinely excited to read more in this series :)

I’ve learned I like historical mysteries, but a historical mystery with engaging characters and a found family? Loved it.

Although the mystery itself didn't grip me as much as I would have liked (I kinda guessed the culprit right away) I really liked the banter of the characters, their personalities were what made this book. Normally I don't like books set in previous centuries, but this one I didn't mind, I enjoyed it a lot ☺️

This was a fun intro to this series.

I loved the snark between Wrexford and Tyler and Kit every once in a while. Henning too. Wrexford definitely tried to play at the "aloof man who has no friends" but really he had a couple. I liked how he looked at things and investigated the situation. Even though he tried to hide it, I also liked how he took to Raven and Hawk; something tells me those two are going to get involved in future investigations no matter what Charlotte tries to say.

Speaking of Charlotte, she was interesting as well. There are a few things where it feels like the author is trying to setup a big reveal but I'll admit I don't get the feeling it's going to be as bad as the author thinks they're going for. I liked the different approaches Charlotte and Wrexford had to investigating and how well they played off each other.

How do you mess this up? The premise was enough to hook me. Period piece? Check. Murder mystery? Check. A brooding hero who probably has a heart of gold? Check. A plucky heroine with a sweet, motherly relationship with two kids? Check.

And yet, this was the most boring murder mystery I've ever read. Nothing happens for the bulk of it. I desperately wanted to stop reading before the halfway mark because I was 10 chapters in, and nothing interesting was happening. But I felt like I should be fair and read the entire thing before judging it. It was tough. I got eager to finish each chapter to get it over with, not because I wanted to know what happens next. I started reading this book at the beginning of the month, but there were days when I just couldn't find the energy to pick it up, otherwise, I would've finished it in a week. I'm glad I finished it because I can say that the last four chapters kept me engrossed.

Overall, just a slow-paced, boring book with a rushed, but interesting conclusion.
