I really liked the book. I will say about 75% of the way through like s*it got real but it’s real issues that happen in corporate America. It’s a good mixture of a light read but definitely has some feminist undertones which I liked.

I am on a Julia Whelan (audiobook narrator) kick, and chose this book because of her. Corporate drama is not a bad plot, and the depiction of the inner workings of the big law firms seems on point (from the perspective of a few friends who've gone down that route).

I wanted to love the main character, wanted to cheer her on - and found myself getting super frustrated with her decisions. And that is what kept me reading. What is this girl getting herself into.

And the end - I love a girl power, take down the patriarchy storyline, and I think this book handled that tastefully. It wasn't over the top, it felt believable, and honestly the last few chapters were hard to hear.

I was so very frustrated with this whole book. Alex was a complete jerk when it came to her boyfriend (being embarrassed of him, cheating etc) and to her parents as well. She was so unlikeable that despite her attempts to make things better in the end I couldn’t forgive her.

Wow. Could not put this down. This fictional look at the world of BigLaw was incredible and unsettling at times. Interesting and also heartbreaking to watch Alex’s progression as she got deeper into her work and life at the firm.

I think this could have been 100 pages shorter (a lot of drinking/partying/self destructive scenes, for example, could have been taken out - that got pretty repetitive). Overall, though, it was entertaining and voyeuristically interesting to be put in the world of a first year associate in a big New York City law firm. It took a while to get to the point, but the payoff was worth it. It definitely conveyed that sexism in law firms and among the ultra rich is a real thing, though hopefully with stories like these it'll change.

Trigger warnings abound. Please look that over before you choose this book. It was one of those that I read in sections because it was really intense and hard to read for long periods of time.  It was about a BigLaw (read most prestigious with the most revenue) Law Firm that abuses its first year associates. I'm guessing since the author is a lawyer that most of it is true which is depressing and frustrating and shows just how far our society has NOT come.

Spoiler alert:
does not have a happy ending.
