Mileage on this will vary for how willing you are to stick with its slow pace and outdated views on sexuality, but for me this is one of the most impactful and brutally melancholy books of all time. Easy to see how this inspired the next seventy-five years of psychoanalyzing murderers to the point of absurdity, but disappointing to see how many of them completely missed the point Levin makes here, that the root of human depravity and cruelty is ultimately unfathomable and can only be realized in glimpses and rationalizations. You can pathologize all you want, it will only ever get you halfway there. 

Maybe the most existentially mournful and depressed book I’ve ever read. Incredible.

Not my thing. I thought it was a tad long, I wrote a longer more detailed review on Monster librarian. I got the review copy of the new edition through them. I can see why it's a classic though.

what was the last straw? was it the homophobic stereotypes? or the gay kinky murderers talking like “aw shucks golly gee :0” all the time? or now that i think about it everyone talking like a combination between a little kid in a 1950s sitcom and a noir detective? anyway never trust a man named judd, let the worst song from oklahoma! be a lesson.

"Compulsion" è un libro affascinante, questo è il primo aggettivo che viene in mente dopo questa lettura. Si intromette nelle pulsioni e nelle motivazioni più segrete di due giovani studenti universitari, ricchi e brillanti, che decidono di commettere un crimine, senza alcuna ragione apparente. Il fatto è che, per la prima volta nello stato dell'Illinois, viene introdotta un'immagine diversa della salute mentale: non si può discutere di infermità e di non infermità, questi sono concetti giuridici che non sono riscontrabili per quanto riguarda la psicologia e la psichiatria. Questo sviluppo nella scelta difesa e nella conduzione del processo è provocato dalla spinta dei nuovi studi viennesi (Freud, sopra tutti). Meyer Levin, da profano della materia, ma da collega dei giovani e da coetaneo che tanti aspetti condivide con loro, cerca di fornire un resoconto di quei giorni che sconvolsero la città di Chicago per la crudezza del crimine commesso. Meyer Levin fu coinvolto nell'omicidio e poi nel processo in quanto fu colui che per primo riconobbe nel cadavere della le fattezze del ragazzo per cui era stato richiesto il riscatto, un giovane quattordicenne di buona famiglia, anche lui ebreo; si occupò poi delle cronache giornalistiche delle indagini e del processo e fu chiamato a testimoniare durante il processo.
Meyer Levin scrisse questo libro in occasione dell'udienza a proposito della possibilità di scarcerazione con la condizionale di uno dei due assassini (l'altro era stato ucciso precedentemente in carcere) e gli fu detto che la sua opinione avrebbe potuto influire sul giudizio del giudice.
Levin, dunque, fa in modo di ricostruire quella che è un'analisi psicologica delle motivazioni dei due assassini, sulla base dei colloqui con esperti psichiatri, trapelati sui giornali durante il processo. Il ritratto è spaventoso, si trattò di un crimine la cui volontà fu soprattutto quella di autodistruzione (simbolica), una autodistruzione che doveva cancellare la condizione - interpretata secondo il pregiudizio occidentale - debole di ebrei americani e rimediare ai conflitti con la propria identità sessuale e la propria sessualità. Ne risulta un romanzo "true crime" che toglie il fiato per l'affastellamento di pietà, compassione, ma anche disgusto e soprattutto rabbia. Rabbia per un processo che, se fosse stato condotto dopo l'abolizione della condanna a morte, forse sarebbe risultato ancora più giusto, ancora più importante per la storia della giurisprudenza e quella degli studi psicologici.

Straightforward and entertaining retelling of the Leopold and Loeb murder case, somewhat overwrought in tone and would have benefited from being shorter. I didn't care for the disclaimer that the first person narrator who witnessed the events stated upfront that he would invent dialogue and interactions to cover situations he couldn't have known; the attempt to have it both ways with both first and third person narrator seemed like cheating to me. Pick one and work within that limitation.
