This was not a good book. The plot was so unbearably slow - I was half way through the book before the situation described on the back cover was even set up. None of the main characters are likable, or even particularly interesting. The comparisons between the Salem trials and the present day were so awkwardly spelled out that it felt as though the author was purposefully describing everything for the reader in excruciating detail that made it repetitive and again, extremely slow. The dialogue was just awful.

The historical mystery half of the plot (well, maybe more like a third) was much more interesting than the rest, and the only believable part. Sorry, just couldn't swallow the premise.

Some slightly dubious neuroscience imho but hey it was written in the 90s and this is fiction anyways. Brutal ending, and, this being Cook, a rather unsubtle ethical message at the end. This one leans into the horror/thriller aspect more than most. Not a fan of the character relationships in this one. Admittedly an interesting choice to root it in the Salem witch trials but still not amazing.

Book took a twist I wasn't expecting. A moderately easy enjoyable read

This book really surprised me, I didn't know what to expect and was reading it to fulfil a challenge category so it was picked for it's title and I hadn't actually read a synposis.
Well it's starts off at the latter end of the 16th century and you witness the beginnings of the Salem witch trials, Elizabeth immediately become your heroine. Before you know it you've skipped forward 300 years and you meet Kim, a direct decendant of Elizabeth and as the you turn the pages you are willing Kim on to find out what really happened to Elizabeth and why the 'evidence' against her has been kept a secret all these years.
Strangely what I got out of this book was not what the description says. It is billed as a race to find a new drug and Edward is given top billing. Well for me he had a minor role, Kim and Elizabeth's memory take front and centre and I could not stop turning pages to find out the truth.
Great book very worthy of 5 stars

Honestly the best part of this book was the last couple chapter which kept me on my toes and up reading late but rest of the book was….well it could have been a whole lot better.
