☔️Review☔️

I knew absolutely nothing about this book before reading it except that I loved the cover of it and I saw a few people recommending it in various reviews on the internet. I love going into books blind because I always end up surprised in the best way possible. So far, anyways, fingers crossed it stays that way.

I really enjoyed the relationship in this one. I loved the relationship they had before anything started happening because it was a strong friendship, a connection you don’t find often. And the way Farley bonded with Hazel and knew sign language was meant to be. I also enjoyed the fact that they both were secretly in love with each other the whole time. I love when it isn’t once sided. It’s so much more fun that way.

And when each of them is secretly in love with the other, there is pinning, there is flirting and longing and restraint. Of course fake dating is the best way to end the charade and bring out the confessions. A classic method of bringing out those feelings.

I loved the stand up part of it too. The fact that they were both comedians and seeing a bit into that world was fun. It held my interest the whole time and was a unique concept I hadn’t seen before!

I also love when a good epilogue wraps it up so nicely at the end. Always a bonus.

Honestly, this book is a bit meh. It's sweet and it's not conflict-oriented, but I feel like there is too much jumping around in the storyline, between dual POVs and occasional looks back to the past.

I appreciated that the characters recognized that being friends prior to being involved romantically strengthened their relationship, but I also felt like their lack of communication about their feelings was forced and incongruent with their friendship dynamic.

Farley is kind and captivating, but her character lacks flaws. She's written to be a strong, crass woman, and I think that's a great concept, but you can't write a relatable character that lacks genuine flaws. She spirals, but the book doesn't dig into that too far. It's so romance-oriented that it's like the romance "fixes" her.

As for Meyer, he's protective and sweet, but he also seems too good to be true. His only real flaw is that he can't seem to speak up about his feelings for Farley, and once that's taken care of, he's essentially just there to make Farley feel good.

My favorite parts were the ones that showcased the dynamic between Farley and Hazel. I almost wish this was less romance (you'll rarely catch me saying that) and more about being so radiant that you light up a child's life, and by extension light up the parent's life, too. Overall, still a cute read.

I guess it's more like 2.5. I wanted to like this, but I think I'm just not the ideal reader for this type of thing. First, I think the premise of the book set me up with too high expectations. It's about two stand up comedians who fall in love? Surely, this will mean nonstop clever banter and it will be adorable. At the very least, the protagonist's personal observations will be heavily influenced by a comedic viewpoint, right? Not so much. I can't really recall anything I would consider a clever bit. The parts that discuss the standup routine is mostly summarized, so the author doesn't have to actually give us too many of the actual jokes. And probably my biggest gripe is that Meyer never actually tells a joke, despite being praised as a former comedy genius and a current comedy writer.

Secondly, I think just the friends to lovers trope is just not for me. As as I see it, there was literally no conflict or tension in the plot. By the time we're maybe 30% into the book, both characters have already confessed their feelings for each other, have established that they've both felt this way from the beginning, and have already physically acted on their desires. So... what's left to happen? The rest of the book just reads like a diary of the actions of a cute new couple. Weirdly, right at the very end the author tries to squeeze in a random bit of conflict by having one of the characters withhold information, but this is literally when there is only maybe 5% of the book left, and you know they're just going to get past it and live happily ever after.

Also, structurally, the story just didn't do it for me. There is an attempt to do dual timelines, but it really doesn't add anything to the book - there are no big reveals - and in fact, just makes it harder for readers to follow along. I also expected the pretend dating trope to be strung out a little to create that much-needed tension, but there are maybe a few paragraphs dedicated to the one time they appeared to fake their relationship for the cameras, and then very quickly after the relationship became a real one, so the fake dating became irrelevant.

4.5 stars. I love it when BOTH leads are already in therapy when the book begins and actually act like it.
