There were some serious topics that were discussed that I wasn’t prepared for. I kept hearing “everyone cried on chapter 39” and I couldn’t possibly see why. Then I read it. No spoilers, but it was totally unexpected. For sure read the TWs. It was a good story and debut novel. I look forward to seeing what else Meave Hazel decides to write. Also, does anyone know how one can get into tree therapy? Asking for a friend.

this book is far from light and deals with anxiety, depression, and mental illness in general. i loved the main character's growth (and her in therapy) throughout the book. her growth was beautifully described and it rly represents what i felt when my depression was at its peak. this book shows the main character, with debilitating anxiety, navigating through finding herself and seeing her worth, as well as fall in love. i love the characters and cried at the twist. however, im not a big fan of the first 30% or so of the book, but the end makes it worth it!

*LOOK UP TRIGGER WARNINGS

Fake dating, he becomes so enamored with her, she’s reserved yet had a lightness to her that is interesting, romance, and topics like anxiety that are mentioned in the story. This was a quick, easy, good book to read.

Right away this book caught my attention when I first heard the trope of fake dating being one of the main tropes of the story as well as the beautiful cover. Blue is my favorite color, and I have to say this cover was so pretty I couldn’t stop staring at it. This book centered on Indigo and Elias. Indigo was a reserved, quiet, introvert kind of person who liked to be within her circle of comfort as opposed to being around others and going out socially. There was a reason why Indigo kept to herself and the way she was which was revealed later more in depth throughout the story. Elias was the devoted older brother of Olivia (Indigo’s friend) and coming back home not only to visit his family, but also to move back. With Elias not having the heart to tell his parents the truth about him actually moving back home and the reason why he isn’t with his girlfriend anymore, Elias found himself caught up in a little white lie that got Indigo caught up in a fake relationship. Indigo and Elias were somewhat opposites with Elias being more outgoing whereas Indigo was an introvert. I found it interesting to see the two interact and slowly but surely watch as Indigo branched out of her comfort zone.

Indigo’s story was unique in a way that I wasn’t expecting. Indigo was quite reserved and she tried her best to get out of her comfort zone, but for the most part it was hard for her (which was understandable). Through Indigo’s chapter, it seemed like her anxiety was an obstacle for her, and in a way reading about me opened my eyes to the reality of what someone or Indigo experienced when it came to their anxiety. I will say that the way Maeve wrote Indigo’s character and story was a different approach I liked and appreciated. At times, I wanted to hug Indigo, but I’m sure if she was real she might not really like hugging. Once Indigo dove into her childhood and past, my heart broke for her, and ugh it was just disheartening to hear what she had gone through. My point being, Indigo wasn’t just reserved, she was also kind, endearing, and even at her most vulnerable she tried her best in bettering her social skills and mental health.

Elias was also a nice character with him being patient and understanding when it came to Indigo. Elias and Indigo shared a love for plants which was cute for them, and what originally started as a fake relationship developed into an actual romance they didn’t think would happen. The things Elias would say about Indigo were so sweet and romantic like, come on, how could you not love it? I also thought it was adorable how close Elias was with his sister Olivia, you could tell that he loved her very much, but also took on an a parent role with her because, he wanted to make sure she was always ok not matter what. Elias was overall a kind and thoughtful person, who also was a great listener and supporter for Indigo.

Halfway towards almost the ending, a shocking moment occurred that took me completely by surprise, but also broke my heart. Please make sure you check trigger warnings for this book as there are some heavy topics mentioned in the story. This book initially came across as lighthearted to me, but there was also that equal punch of emotional moments too. Elias and Indigo experienced loss and some devastation in their lives, and it was so sad seeing what happened (IF You know, you know).

Overall, I would say this book was a mixture of emotional and lighthearted. Indigo’s life wasn’t perfect, she had her own struggles she dealt with on a daily basis, but little by little she overcame them, and started to live her life as she wanted. Elias was sweet and such a devoted older brother to Olivia. Olivia was funny, sassy, and a good friend to Indigo. The romance was cute, and Elias and Indigo had their happy ending. The pacing of the book was pretty quick and fairly easy to read.

I got sent this arc in return for an honest review.

First I wanted to say I reached out to the author and had a wonderful conversation and discussion of the things I liked and didn’t like which I appreciate Maeve taking the time to discuss with me and I wanted to thank Maeve for the opportunity on sending me the ARC to read her debut novel. I wanted to love this book but I also need to be honest in my review.

What I loved:
  1. The playlist at the start of the book I listened to before starting the book.
  2. Short chapters are amazing I felt like I was flying through the book.
  3. Elias the character I loved as he was so sweet and understanding of Indigo.
  4. Plot twist knocked me side ways and I wasn’t expecting it at all. I was too shocked to cry
  5. Dual POV so we got chapters of Indigo and Elias.
  6. Also the paperback and cover of this book is stunning!

What I struggled with:
I received an ARC copy of this book and there were no trigger warnings mentioned before I started reading. Personally I don’t have any triggers but this may be an issue for some readers.
The plot and characters felt disconnected and I wanted more explanation of storyline. Some examples are:
  • Indigos parents we got a few scenes only and then at 73% the real reason why they don’t get along but I felt it wasn’t enough and wanted more of a background.
  • Why was Olivia hanging with Indigo and how old was Olivia?
  • I wanted the mental health issues explored more and why she was taking medication.
  • What was Indigos Job? I thought she was a dog walker but turned out she sell paintings but only occasionally.. I see this as more as a hobby.
  • Who was Enya to Indigo? After a discussion with the author I missed this information in the book.
  • I wanted Elias job more clearly explained aswell. I think he is a tree biologist?
As you can see I just have quite a few questions after reading the book.

Tropes I also struggled to understand.
  • Fake Dating this could have been explored more as it’s only in 15% of the book. (This is advertised as the main trope)
  • Billionaire yes the main character has money but I wouldn’t say billionaire
  • Reverse Grumpy / Sunshine - I see this but I find her character more sad and reserved. She isn’t grumpy towards him just cautious
  • Forced Proximity it wasn’t forced she made the choice to stay after the people who they had to fake date in front of asked if she would stay.
  • Workplace this I’m not sure about my understanding of workplace is they work together but they don’t.
  • Found Family I guess but she still has her parents just don’t get along so it is her boyfriends family.

Overall I was intrigued to keep reading to the end as I was waiting for more story and more plot information. It had potential just it felt very disconnected.
