this book is so fucking boring. i’m tired of mom books so it’s my own fault. i think it’s supposed to be shocking but it was in fact not at all. it’s like if girl interrupted we’re bad and boring with no plot

an incredibly nuanced telling of a mothers mental illness, love, and life, from the point of view of her youngest daughter. not a pleasant read by any means, but a pretty good one. recommend for all the people out there with mentally ill mothers (like myself), though check the content warnings first. there’s a lot covered here

The book starts off slow outlining the childhood of the two sisters. In part 2 we get to learn more about maman which greatly adds to the story. In the end you really understand how the two sisters maman profoundly impacts their lives.

Well reading this was like taking a painful walk down the memory lane of my childhood.
I felt that the second part, the fictionalised hypothesis of what her mother’s life had been like, was the weakest bit.
But otherwise the writing is fantastic and the recollection, traumatically bittersweet.

This is legitimately so French. I don't think I've come across a book or work of art that has come sooooooooooooooo clearly from the mind of a French person. And that's fun.
Sometimes great, sometimes boring. Cool to see a book that captures an erratic, toxic, yet charismatic mother with such nuance. She isn't a villain, and she isn't a saint. The third part is awful, and the second part drags a bit at times (and sometimes feels like a lesser version of an Annie Ernaux work), but the first part is pretty great. Very darkly funny.
Hideous cover though.

Longlisted for the 2022 International Booker Prize, this auto-fiction about Huisman's mother and their family life is not without interest but I was underwhelmed.
