Given it's a prequel and I have not read the others the book was good. You didn't need to have read the others  to know the world as you are introduced to it via the female character. I am a little unsure which age group this book was aimed at as at the start it felt like teensbaged 12 to 14 but bits of it were more 16 to 19 year olds. Hopefully this will give this series an in on the teens to come.

I could have read a book twice as long about Terciel and Elinor, I wish we could have had longer with them, especially Elinor. Made me want to reread the original trilogy.

i read this so quickly and voraciously that i will, in time, need to re-read it to remember everything that happened...but reading it, as always when reading an Old Kingdom novel, felt like coming home. ♡

It's so weird to read about Sabriel's parents! But like in a good way, lol. It's cool to learn more about them, and especially to see Terciel so young and slightly out of his depth. I loved Elinor instantly, bless her theatre-nerd heart. Can we have more stories about them?
