I liked Sarah's Key a lot more than this book, but as I kept reading it began to grow on me. I was curious to see where the author was taking this. I enjoyed it. I am glad I stuck with it It gave me a lot to think about.

The farther I got into this book, the more frustrated I became with Madame Rose. I understand the connection and love she had for the house, but I do not think Armand would have wanted it to end that way. I believe if he were alive, he would have fought for the house to stay, and after losing, would have moved somewhere else. I understand that she felt she could never be happy anywhere else, but I do not believe suicide was the right answer. By staying in that house, she is hurting Gilbert, her daughter, her grandchildren, the Baronne de Vresse, and Alexandrine. It is a very selfish thing to do, and it does not solve any problems. I wish Rose would have realized that she has survived much greater losses than her house being torn down, and she can survive this loss as well.

This story just didn't have anything for me. I finished it, thus the two stars, but it was poor. It may have been an interesting premise for the book, but the story and the main character just never pulled me in. There wasn't enough written about any part of the story to make me care about the people It took me weeks to finish a book that should have taken a day of reading. And the answer to the nightmare that we start to hear about midbook is ridiculous. I won't spoil it, but I thought "Good Lord how predictable was this and how quickly it laid out." This one will go in the donate pile for some other poor soul.

Interesting story but I did not love the book. My issues are: I did not find the way the main charterer loved one child more than another believable. I also found what I thought there was a flaw in the story regarding the hired help and a major event at the end of the story.

If you are looking to read another Sarah's Key... it is not this book. I felt that it was semi-repetitive which docked it a star. I really enjoyed the narration style but I didn't see the ending coming. I do think about the ending of this book all the time because it was so unexpected.
