I don’t think I can get over the power imbalance cause she works for him, even though I know this wasn’t even a thing back then

I'm torn because while i think i liked the book, it was different from what it was promising.

A experienced heroine settled on having vengeance by seducing an older, work-obsessed, straight laced, celibate widow? Yes please.

Except this wasn't that. Of Course I knew she was going to actually fall for him and abandon the revenge plot, but I didn't expect for it to happen almost immediately. Besides that the hero was the one who did all the actual seducing and pursuing of the relationship. Plus the heroines initial cool exterior and experience? Nope. At the first signs of any actual sexual tension she freaks out and tells him they can't. The first few scenes she was so self-possessed leading to some amazing scenes of wordless sexual tension between them, but after that she turned into the usual flustered heroine. She also cried way more than I expected for someone who supposedly used to the cruelties of the world.

But the hero was hot af so there's that. And I definitely felt tingles during some scenes.

So it's not a bad book by all means, it just was more of the usual dynamics despite advertising something else.

Lady Sophia's Lover
4 Stars

Lady Sophia Sydney is out for vengeance against the man she holds responsible for her brother’s death: Sir Ross Cannon - Chief Magistrate and leader of the Bow Runners. Sophia’s plan is to seduce Ross and destroy him both personally and professionally. However, a wrench is soon put into these plans when Sophia realizes that Ross is not the man she thought and finds herself falling in love with him.

The first 2/3 is simply spectacular. Ross is an incredible hero - intelligent, kind hearted, honorable and a born leader. He starts out quite stoic but softens as Sophia gets past all of his defenses and he realizes that she is everything he never knew he always wanted. Sophia is an engaging heroine and her chemistry with Ross is off the charts sensual. Their growing emotional and physical attachment makes for entertaining reading.

Unfortunately, the plot takes a slight turn for the worse toward the end when Sophia undergoes an a disappointing character reversal - keeping secrets, telling lies and being all round weak and insipid. Where did the strong willed, independent and caring heroine of most of the book disappear to?

Despite this shortcoming and the fact that the twist in the tale is rather obvious, Lady Sophia’s Lover is a well-written and enjoyable read. Looking forward to the last book in the trilogy.

So much better than the first book in this series! I really enjoyed the twists and turns of this story and while this is not a new trope, it is delivered well.

MMC was great but heroine is seemingly dumb as rocks. Made some appalingly stupid decisions. I get it was to move the plot forward but jesus. She's lucky she's hot I guess. Great chemistry and liked the setting, though. Bow Street Runners series is just OK so far - so we'll see where the next one takes us...
