While this was very informative and I learned quite a lot this book read more like an advertisement for plant based eating with some scientific data in-between, than actual studies and data.

Hard to give a fully thought out review so here’s my pros and cons list:

Pros
  • Informative- uses a lot of scientific language and explanations
  • Discusses and debunks the myth that gluten is bad for you (unless you are celiac)
  • Talks about ways and gives actual advice on helping fix your gut with food intolerances
  • New information (as someone who has read many nutrition books)
  • But also old information! (which makes claims feel a little more sound and like I’ve actually retained something)

Cons
  • The writing in at least the first half of the book is borderline pretentious and assumptive.
  • Fear monger-y with its claims on what’s killing us and over promising on how his menthols can reverse serious diseases
  • Mentions and praises lower body weight often along with very absolute language about how we should eat which can be very toxic for someone with BDD or eating disorders
  • A lot of responsibility placed on the reader to basically re-write their entire life and wellness with very little room for error or flexibility in diet (I.e. getting your hands on large varieties of produce that may be hard to come by in many areas, assuming everyone has infinite amounts of time to prepare these foods, shaming “poor” eating)

Overall this was an interesting book. I listened to the audio and was intrigued enough to keep reading even though the first half was the most exhausting imo. I struggle to read books written by men about food and nutrition because they miss the mark in many ways, but if you want to approach a plant based, fiber rich lifestyle, this can be a good read. It absolutely should not be the first nutrition book you read for all the above reasons.

Packed with scientific data, written by a GI doctor…this isn’t your typical fad diet book. Really made me think.
