***Reread 6 April 2024***

STILL one of my favourite horror novels ever. Impeccable vibes and I will continue to recommend this till the end of time.

***1st Read 13 December 2020***
This was 100% my brand of spooky shit! I LOOOOVED how this kept me guessing about whether it was psychological or supernatural.

Obsessed.

This book really got me you guys!
Here I was thinking it wouldn’t be too bad because it’s like 200 pages. But no, it’s so creepy.
If you like thrillers and horror novels that will make you question everything- this ones for you!

“ In a series of online posts, Parker H., a young psychiatrist, chronicles the harrowing account of his time working at a dreary mental hospital in New England. Through this internet message board, Parker hopes to communicate with the world his effort to cure one bewildering patient.

We learn, as Parker did on his first day at the hospital, of the facility’s most difficult, profoundly dangerous case—a forty-year-old man who was originally admitted to the hospital at age six. This patient has no known diagnosis. His symptoms seem to evolve over time. Every person who has attempted to treat him has been driven to madness or suicide.

Desperate and fearful, the hospital’s directors keep him strictly confined and allow minimal contact with staff for their own safety, convinced that releasing him would unleash catastrophe on the outside world. Parker, brilliant and overconfident, takes it upon himself to discover what ails this mystery patient and finally cure him. But from his first encounter with the mystery patient, things spiral out of control, and, facing a possibility beyond his wildest imaginings, Parker is forced to question everything he thought he knew.”

Bleh. I only really finished it because it was short and I was curious to see if maybe a twist would redeem it. It was disappointing, not to mention the clearly harmful rhetoric around people with mental illness: that they can be “cured”, that they’re “insane”, that they’re “mental patients”. Dewitt’s knowledge about psychology and mental illness seems limited and therefore makes Parker seem incompetent in his position (ex: saying he learned the hard way not to challenge the delusions of a person with schizophrenia... this is common sense if you’ve studied psych and worked with people with mental illness). Comparing his work to that of Stephen King is just offensive. This is NOT horror. I didn’t find it scary in the slightest. You’re better off reading a summary of the book and moving on with your life.
