I know that this will appear to blasphemy to some, but I had a very hard time enjoying this book.

The musketeers are, in my opinion, extremely unlikeable (d'Artagnan included). Their characters have not aged well. True, they are gallant and Noble, but they have such terrible flaws that it took away from my appreciation of their characters. I disliked d'Artagnan so strongly that I found myself wishing that the book were shorter.

The characters that were truly interesting were the women, but we did not see as much of them unfortunately. The most exciting g part of the book for me was Milady's imprisonment in the later part of the book.

I can appreciate the novelty of the adventure and the sprit in the authors writing. I adore Alexandre Dumas' style, as well as the various themes he manages to sneak in. But unfortunately the good points were just not enough for me to give this a 4 star rating.

I read this in high school and LOVED it! I read it twice and the sequels. This time I was “meh” about the whole thing. Maybe I wasn’t in the mood? Maybe it was because I listened rather than read? Maybe I have less patience for one dimensional women? Suffice to say the first was fine, the last was fine, the middle was a horrible slog.

Jest dość spora różnica pomiędzy książką a produkcjami ekranowymi. Dużo scen zostało pominiętych lub zastąpionych. Jestem ciekawa kolejnych części.

This was no Count of Monte Cristo. It would have been excellent if 200 boring pages were edited out.

I rather enjoyed this book. I had seen a movie about it once in my childhood, and had read the very much condenced illustrated version that my school library had in middle school, but I thought that since I'm all grown up now I ought to read the full version. And so, I did.

I got very engulfed in the story and sometimes read for hours without realizing how much time I'd spent. There were a lot of intricate details and twists of plot/characters that remind me of Dickens, although I think this was far better executed. Still too many coincidences for my liking, but it all worked out in the end.

Really, though, I doubt there's much to say about it. Many of you have already read the story, and besides - it wouldn't be a classic novel if it wasn't great, right? (Actually, knowing some of the other "classics" I was forced to read in my life, I'm not sure I can make this statement.) But, if you haven't read the novel in its entirety, I really enjoyed this edition. It also comes with some really great illustrations that get you into the feeling of what things may have been like during this time period. Highly recommended.

Well I can certainly see why this has been in print for nearly 80 years. It is a pretty grand comedic adventure and a lot of fun to read. I'm satisfied with the Pevear translation, though I haven't anything to compare it to: it read smoothly and coherently and I felt like I was getting not just the story but the Dumas' flair for storytelling.

4 for now because the beginning was slow but by the end I was hooked! I loved the musketeers, I loved how evil Lady De Winter was! I loved the reading experience pretty much from page 300 on!

Was looking for a version of The Three Musketeers available for free on audio and came across this. It's a little bit like The Archers, all spoken word and the clinking of cutlery, which took a bit of time to get used to as the four main mens voices did not feel immediately very distinct. There is a lot of sex/kissing noises as well which sometimes felt like it went on a bit longer than necessary.

Once I got a hang of who the different people were it was an enjoyable listen. I didn't love the story and almost all the characters felt pretty unlikeable but I'm glad I gave it a go.
