This was a weird book for me, I want to give it 2.5 stars …. I almost didn’t finish reading it but I pushed through… I loved the romance and relationship between Effy and Preston. I also really liked the whole mystery behind the book Angharad. But, everything with the Fairy King was just weird and I didn’t care for it. There was also 1-2 scenes that were not very YA friendly, I definitely wouldn’t want my 12 and 14 year old daughters reading it.

This was my first read for a local book club, and it was a fast paced read but I would be lying if I said it was easy to get into. The world-building is either clunky, OR I just don’t get it. But I would not have gotten through this book without borrowing the audiobook on libby.

I was unsure of the time in which the book takes place. It seemed more of a fantasy at times, and then modern at others. I was willing to overlook it because I really wanted to read about Effy & Preston.

The romance portion of this book is perfect for me! I enjoyed the mystery plot, and how most things weren’t what they seemed to be at first glance. At the beginning, I thought the writing was lyrical (and still do in parts) but as the story went on, they went from lyrical to repetitive. (There are so many water metaphors.)

I’d recommend it to a friend, but after thinking, this is more of a 3.5 star read for me. I’m usually not one for academia books though. I don't think I'll keep my physical copy of this book though.
