I really liked this book! I liked how the people who get to be the heroes are such an awesome diverse group of people. I like how the author does a gray job describing the political and social issues that are true to the country while still making it a fantasy novel.

A masterfully woven story of first contact that is rooted in African culture and depicts the arrival of aliens in an un-Hollywood location: Nigeria. Responding to the unfair depiction shown in District 9, Okorafor offers her own story in which Nigeria and its religion, culture and colonial history make it the perfect City to welcome extra-terrestrials.

Now that I've finished my fourth Nnedi Okorafor, I want to read them all! I love the way she weaves the fantastic into the mundane. While there are elements of this book that propel it into the realm of science fiction, at the heart, this book is really about relationships on a small scale and human nature under stress on a large scale.

I wavered between 3 and 4 stars. It took me a while to get into the book, but then it was so unusual, so surprising, that I became really taken with it.

Not Another War of the Worlds Ripoff!

When you think “alien invasion” story, all too often it’s another War of the Worlds retelling. This book is absolutely not that. It’s creative, fun, unique and unlike anything I’ve ever read. I loved this so much and look forward to checking out more work from this author.

2.5 rounded up because I like Nnedi Okorafor as a writer; this book just wasn't for me.

It's objectively a really good book but I really didn't enjoy it. The writing is strong, the characters are all incredibly fleshed out and real. But I hated so many of them. Visceral hate. The only character I sort of liked died. The ending didn't resonate well with me. That is all. That is all I have space for.
