This is an excellent book that I think everyone should read at least once in their lives. In painting the picture of a dystopian future, Orwell uses psychological theories and historical patterns which make the plot quite believable and gives you a lot to think about. When reading the first half of this book, I was going to give 1984 five stars because it was so engaging and got the point across perfectly. However, halfway through, he adds an essay by Goldstein which ruins the flow of the narrative. After that essay, I found the story went a little down hill and wasn't as interesting. Overall, a great book though!!

I never had to read this in school, so thought I should read it now. It started off strong, but around the time Winston started reading The Book, I really lost interest. As far as dismal watched-and-controlled future visions go, I preferred both Brave New World and This Perfect Day.

An interesting book that I believe I read in high school. It is eerie how some of the events in 1984 are occurring now. Orwell was simply a little too early with his predictions.

Set in '1984' Winston works for the department of truth. The world is split between three ruling countries. Oceania includes England which is where Winston lives. His world is a place controlled by Big Brother who is always watching. Controlling thoughts and actions. This eas a fascinating book about what can happen, George Orwell writes an interesting story, as he did with Animal Farm. This is certainly not a world I would want to live in!
