I thought it was a beautiful story about death and coping with death. The elaborate magical realism reminded me of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's stories.

Listened to the audiobook and was near ready to pull my eyes out with this terrible narration where the woman who is doing it does these hideous voices based on stereotypes that are not present as defining characteristics in the book. Doing terrible voices for old people is bad enough but she also does them poorly and they're screechy and unlistenable.

Beautiful and creative writing… I wanted to like that book honestly, I did not see the point of the story. Did I miss something?

I think this was a good book, but I read it in 6 minute increments, so I couldn't get into it. I wish I would have started it on a plane and had 3-4 hrs to get sucked in.

Engaging and multi-layered. I couldn't always keep the various stories in my grasp, but that was OK. It made the read more interesting and challenging. The general sense I took away was the interesting flexibility with roots in tradition that enables understanding the present and overcoming a difficult reality. Sounds totally presudo-initellectual, but kept me reading.

I was so looking forward to reading this book because of all the wonderful reviews. However, so far I've been disappointed. Yes, the author writes lovely prose and excels at providing specific descriptive phrases that draw the reader into the world of the characters.....but after 120 pages, I'm just not finding the story or characters compelling as a whole. I read one review that mentioned that this book seemed like a bunch of excellent stories loosely tied together and I agree. So far I find the stories told by the grandfather to be engaging, but when we get back to the grandaughter, I really don't care about where she is and what she is doing. Also, I'm finding that the dialog is a bit flat compared to the rest of the writing.

I'm not sure if I'm going to continue with it...I feel like I should, but maybe I'm stuck in fluffy book land after so many mommy-track mysteries! Well it's been a week and I just decided to give up on finishing this book.
