“Scientists are like children: They always want to know everything, they all ask too many questions, and they never follow orders to the letter.”
I know that this isn't exactly my typical read, but I really enjoyed the first book of this alien sci-fi trilogy and I've been meaning to continue the series ever since. I confess I did mainly pick up Waking Gods because I was hoping it would take me to South Dakota again like the first book, but no luck there... But this second book will take you to plenty other places instead, and the situation without doubt escalated to a whole new level. Before I continue, a little warning: this is definitely a series to read in order, because you won't understand what is going on otherwise. The characters won't be introduced again either... You've been warned. Anyhow, this sequel went in a different, but no less thrilling direction. In fact, the stakes are even higher in Waking Gods, although it does still have that same feel as the first book. This has everything to do with the unique writing style and format: the story is told through is told through interviews, diaries and other files as well as multiple POVs, which I know might not be for everyone. I personally really enjoyed this mixed media format, and I liked what it added to the plot. There is something truly addictive about this story, and I simply couldn't stop reading... The fact that the love triangle from the first book is not present is only a bonus. Then again, there isn't much time for romance in the first place with the dire situation everyone on Earth finds themselves in... I don't often read and/or enjoy alien stories, but this trilogy is definitely turning out to be a winner so far. I can't wait to pick up the final book soon!
