I realize that I’m in the minority, but I just didn’t enjoy the story and didn’t care about any of the characters.

I was excited for this book. It’s set in Spokane (my hometown), historical fiction, and narrated by a full cast. All pluses in my book. But it never really came together for me. I would rate it 3.5 stars- I had a hard time tracking all of the different characters and felt like because of that, some of the characters weren’t as developed as I would have liked. My favorite character was Jules, who we learned about for for one chapter.

Wonderfully rich characters (some real like Elizabeth Gurley Flynn) in a book that takes place in the early days of labor unions. Throw in a little anarchy and a western setting, and you’ve got quite a story.

I’d been wanting to read some Jess Walter, and this seemed my vibe. It didn’t blow me away, but I enjoyed it.

Epic struggle of the American working/under-class.  I was not captivated by the writing, and the conceit felt super 19th-century to me.  The nail in the coffin was that, while I liked the multiple voices who read different characters, the principal actor was not to my taste, in particular when he read women’s lives in a simpering near- falsetto.  Meh
