"I never thought about it before, but I'm proud to be human. We're ever so flawed. We're frail, confused, violent, and we struggle with so many issues. But all in all, I'm proud to be a Daughter of Man" - Penryn Young

Angelfall is by far, the best dystopian book I have ever read. It's unputdownable! (that's not a word but whatever) I can't believe it took me this long to read this.

Penryn Young is all I ask for in a heroine. Next to Rose Hathaway, she's my second favorite fictional bestie. I love how the author made her character. She's not what you can call a badass but she's trying learning to be. All for her love for her family.

Then there's Raffe. The swoon worthy hero. My heart literally breaks for him at the last few pages. I want to hug him so bad because I can't imagine what's going on at his mind when he's holding Penryn at that moment. I applaude Ms. Ee for NOT making Raffe the typical misogynistic-jerk male lead.

The world that Susan Ee created is pure genius! The way she writes really engaged me and she managed to make Penryn's world enthralling and terrifying. Susan Ee is such a brilliant writer! She's done an amazing job voicing out Penryn. I'm really in awe.

All in all, ANGELFALL is definitely a MUST READ. It's heart racing, thrilling and romantic. I don't know how Susan Ee managed to put that all in one book, but she did it. And she did a magnificent job!!

“I never thought about it before, but I’m proud to be human. We’re ever so flawed. We’re frail, confused, violent, and we struggle with so many issues. But all in all, I’m proud to be a Daughter of Man

This was a lot of fun, and definitely what I needed to pull me out of my reading rut.

The story is nothing new; angels invade the earth which causes the apocalypse, one lone teenage girl must infiltrate the enemy to fix things and fight for her family, the love interest is one of the enemy, etc. However, the way this story is intelligently presented to a YA audience is less common. Fans of Supernatural (and Dystopian novels) may enjoy this, as they have similar themes and even use some of the same angels. There’s also a creepy spin to things which I appreciated. It was very easy to visualize what the author described.

The heroine, Penryn, is badass and not in an irritating know-it-all way. She readily admits that she isn’t as witty as she wishes she was, and we have Raffe, the shirtless fallen angel to take up that slack. I didn’t expect this to be funny but I couldn’t stop laughing through the first bit.

My only complaint about the writing- and I didn’t notice this until about ¾ of the way through- is that the language becomes very repetitive. If a word is used once, then it is used three times in the following sentences. “I know I’m getting my body back but I just lie there until I can sit up. I start to occasionally blink and breathe normally long before I sit up.” That’s a light example, but it was the quickest one I saw at a glance. The word “floor” was used four times in as many sentences and it isn’t a big deal but it’s mildly irritating when the writing is otherwise amazing.

I think I loved the romance but I’m not really sure. I’m debating whether or not I find Raffe’s feelings and his attitude towards Penryn realistic or not (he’s an angel, I know, I know. How realistic can it be?).
Spoiler I feel like there was no emotion from him for most of the book then he’s suddenly kissing her like a “dying man”. It happens really quickly, even with him denying his feelings.
I love that the author didn’t focus the entire plot around this relationship, but I still wanted it to happen!

I really enjoyed reading this. It was fast-paced and interesting. I liked that Penryn wasn't the common YA heroine. She was a fighter and for once a girl with common sense! I liked how the fact that she knew how to fight was woven to the story and that she wasn't presented all the time a stunning, beautiful etc. These facts allowed her character to shine through and painted her as a really likable girl.
Raffe, on the other hand, wasn't one for talking. I liked his scathing remarks but other than that we mainly see him through Penryn's eyes so at times I forgot about him.
The only thing that irked me was the last part of the book. Up until then the story was about a rescue mission a la the Walking Dead. After we get to the aerie the things go way fast way dark. To me this seemed that the author wanted to include some ideas from the start,
Spoiler1920's themed party, Penryn looking fabulous, Raffe's spurned lover, scorpion angel hybrids (!?), crazy doctor experiments, angel politics. These chapters look like a Doctor Who episode!
but because she couldn't write them organically in the story she crammed them in the last few chapters.
Regardless, I do recommend to anyone interested to read this book and I am looking forward to reading the second one.

4.5 stars. This was a really good read, it just didn't quite have that final "ah" for me to push it to 5 stars. As with many post-apocalyptic tales, we have an extremely capable protagonist. Before "the attack" Penryn had her hands full with her handicapped sister and mentally ill mother (who enrolled her in every self-defense class available. That does help explain it.

I did read all three books back to back prior to making my review, so the story has run together a bit in my mind. A little hard to remember exactly where each book left off and the other begins. The trilogy is one story. The books seemed fairly short, a quick and easy read.

Quote spotlights ...

But the thing that really convinces me that the apocalypse is here is the crunching of smartphones under my feet. Nothing short of the end of the world would get our eco-conscious techies to toss their latest gadgets onto the street.

I’ve found an agnostic angel.

This book was really badly written. It went right into the plot at the beginning of the book there was no intro at all. I’m really sad because I was looking forward to this book, but I did not enjoy it at all.
