In Midnight Awakening, we are introduced to Tegan and Elise's romance. They both come from a past of great loss and are both, at first, very far from wanting another relationship. But they have a hard time denying the feelings they have blooming for each other ever since a few months prior, when Tegan drove her home after some very hard times.

In this book, Tegan finds a soft spot for Elise and Elise's hot vengeance rage is cooled by Tegan's touch. It's a beautiful romance between them that is realistic, but at the same time has some flaws.

First of all, it's a little hard to believe that Tegan has refused to fall in love for 500 years, and that Elise get's him to fall in love with her within a matter of days. Although, I know, it's a romance novel and that is inevitably going to happen. But 500 years is many lifetimes and for him to not meet anyone before her that would have sparked so much as a bout of lust, is a little unbelievable. He may be a tortured vampire, but he is still a male and I don't really believe he could go 500 years without sex.

But anywho, aside from that, I really liked Tegan. When I first started reading this novel, I was kind of under the misunderstanding that he might be a lot like Zsadist from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. That would have been fine, considering how much I love Zsadist. But Tegan was a far cry from him. Although tortured from losing his first love, he was not nearly as hard-edged as Zsadist - in my opinion. This wasn't necessarily a BAD thing. But, it showed that Lara Adrian was not trying to create a carbon copy of Zsadist in any way. Tegan was his own character for sure. But I was a bit disappointed at how soft he seemed, even in the beginning. In the previous books it seemed like would have been a much different character than he was when put into focus.

In addition, I really liked Elise's character. She is very strong willed and willing to take care of certain things herself. However, she is not that annoying kind of strong willed woman who doesn't like having her man help her too. I liked the nice middle ground she held.

One thing that I thought was really missing in this book though, was the sex scenes. There were a couple, but not really detailed ones at all. It seemed a little bland because of that. I think that's why, even now, I like the Black Dagger Brotherhood series better than this one. Because in that series, there is a lot more sex and the characters are a little less cardboard. I'm not saying I don't like this series, but it still doesn't even come close to J.R. Ward's world, if you ask me.

Overall, I liked the story. But if I had to compare it to the first two books, I'd say it was a little more bland. The first two books had more action and conflict going on. While there was some action at the end of the book, the beginning and middle of the book was a little slow. The death of a big character happened way too fast, and Elise wasn't even put into a compromising position, as most heroine's usually are.

I did like it though, just not as much as the first ones. I will be continuing the series and I'm looking forward to Rio's story next. It'll be interesting to see what kind of woman will be able to break through the hard shell he's created for himself now.

I think I liked this one more or as much as the last book. I'm still not sure why I'm reading them other than a possible guilty pleasure, because the story line is not fantastic. Pretty sure I just need to follow one couple and see them get together as they kick ass. Yet, I'm still such a sucker for this series, I don't know why.... I think I can take a break and read some books I need to read, but who knows if I'll come back to this one again.... I do kinda wanna read about my boy Rio though :( I was hoping he would be a smart-ass but he might end up having the same personality as Tegan UGH let's hope these guys get more personality traits besides badass and damaged.

Absolutely love this series.

Her character creation is very good. There are a few story lines running at once, and all of them make you eager for more. Well done. I was about to give up on this genre.

If I laugh out loud, shed a tear, or hold my breath while reading a book - I know it's good. And this one, and the rest of the series are definitely ones that make me emotionally connected to the characters.

Well done. Well done.

Thank you Lara Adrian for bringing the Midnight Breed World alive for your readers.

I absolutely love Tegan!! He is such a perfectly tortured alpha hero! Elise is pretty intense herself, and really pretty strong considering. I think Marek should have gotten worse than he did, but at least he has been dealt with! I enjoy this series so much, it is a perfect escape from reality when needed!

I enjoyed MIDNIGHT AWAKENING so much, even more than I remember liking it the first time around. It's gritty and angsty and so emotional because both Elise and Tegan have not had easy lives. They seem like complete opposites at first - Elise is cultured and sheltered from growing up in the DarkHaven and Tegan is cold and ruthless - but they understand each other's pain in a way that others just can't. There was a lot of development in the overarching story of the growing Rogue faction and we also got a little more deeper look into the DarkHavens and Breed politics. I find this world really fascinating and even though it has many of the usual vampire elements, there's also something really unique about it.

Elise was such a wonderful heroine and her pain broke my heart; I can't imagine losing your husband and then your son and now Elise wants nothing more than vengeance. Watching her find herself again and learn to embrace a different kind of life was great to read and while she frequently maintains her more proper ways she's also not afraid to get dirty and fight back. In contrast, Tegan only knows fighting and he's spent centuries pushing down the rage and pain of losing his Breedmate. MIDNIGHT AWAKENING shows quite the emotional journey for Tegan and it's not pretty; he's hard, crass, and even cruel because he's desperate to keep Elise from getting close. And yet, even with all that, there's just something so needy about Tegan that makes me want to hug him and make things better.

Content Warning: Elise is grieving the death of her teenage son; references to the torture and rape of the Tegan's previous mate
