There are still enormous gaps in my Marvel lore, and Loki: Agent of Asgard featured plenty of characters, references, and events I either didn’t recognize or didn’t understand. But by the end, I did feel I am at least up on my Loki lore, having seen him go through an entire character arc that ends in a satisfying place.

While I wasn’t as invested in some of the side stories (the quest for the missing Angela, whatever Dr. Doom was concocting), I appreciated the central plotline with Loki’s quest for redemption, his tenuous position as the “Agent of Agsard,” and his growing relationship with Verity. There are resonances as well with the Loki show on Disney+ (which I thoroughly enjoyed)--two typecast characters struggling to break free of their “type.”

It’s always fun to see a trickster wiggle his way out of things like “fate” and “destiny,” and the Loki of Agent of Asgard does it well and with aplomb.

I am the echo of a scream.
I am the magpie who whispers.
I am the crime that will not be forgiven.
And
this is my story...

» "What's a lie, Verity? A lie is a story told. That's all."

» "Would I lie to you?" 💚

and my favorite non-loki bit:

"Clint?"
"I know—"
"You have the army after you and no health and you're falling out of a crashing plane."
"I know, Nat—"
"It's a bass fishing simulator, Clint."
"I know! It just— It just happens!"

It wouldn’t be a Loki comic if the quality wasn’t all over the place and every story wasn’t half buried in crossovers. This book inherits all the best and the worst parts of Journey Into Mystery, it seems, but with on very big exception: the art is terrific back to front. Things start off amazing before a weird detour into AXIS (a storyline that sounded so colossally dumb that I didn’t even bother to read the main story, much less the tie ins, as it was coming out). After breaking out of that, things recover nicely, but the imminence of Secret Wars distracts from the powerful work Ewing does with the final arc.

Al Ewing shows once again that he can write comics with the best of them. For a series centered on Loki (the god of evil? of mischief? of trickery? of lies? of stories?), this lengthy collection managed to keep me entertained and wanting to go back to it over and over (at a time when I've had 50+ other books checked out at any given time, waiting to tempt me away).

The Axis of whatever crossover and a few other issues were less interesting, but overall, this was smart, fun reading through and through.

DNF. I’ve been going back through much of Al Ewing’s work, but I found this to be pretty dull.

Wow! I didn’t expect to love this book SO MUCH!!! This comic is many things: it’s the exploration of Loki as a character, fighting to change or define who he is; it’s a story of redemption for a crime that cannot be redeemed; it’s an action packed story, fighting to prevent or cause the dire future that awaits; but above all it’s an ode, or maybe a love letter to storytelling itself.

This comic had a bit of everything! It made me laugh, and it almost made me cry; it made me angry, and reflective and it makes me want to be better. It’s got a heist, found family, gender bent Loki and Loki turning into a unicorn!

If you wanted to read more about Loki as a character, this comic is definitely for you! If you’re coming from the show (which apparently got inspiration from this comic) just know it’s a completely different story. Also know that there are some things that’ll be difficult to understand without context. I probably would’ve read Young Avengers (at the very least) before going into this comic. That being said, this IS considered a standalone arc, and there are enough context clues to understand what’s happening or happened in other comics.

Hope you enjoyed this as much as me! Happy readings!!!

I’ve been a fan of Loki since 2011 (Thor mcu ) so once I found this I just couldn’t help myself but to buy it, if you’re a new or an old fan I would seriously recommend this to any one who loves Loki and just wants more of mischief
