A charming diversion to be sure.

My two stars are mostly about my interest in the book and don't reflect on its quality. I think what most affected my experience of this book was similar to how reading the Idiot was after having read Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov. The comic, satirical novels are just not my favorite. Nevertheless there were a few exceptional moments in this novel-the paleontology professor, the circus, the military draft examination- and it unfortunately suffers from being unfinished. It's by no means a thoughtlessly vapid novel. Ultimately though, I prefer The Magic Mountain and Buddenbrooks by far.

Beautifully Written, but best summed up as an old man's fan fiction of what his life could have been had he the look and intelligence he so craved. A Fun and playful romp.

A slightly dissapointing read, continually teased drama and offered more excitement only to repeatedly deliver vainglorious and flowery monolgues from the novels superbly self absorbed protagonist, it is quite the acheivement to create such a dislikable main character. In all not without good bits but never truly lived up to the hype the main character generates around his story. I feel both cheated and releived Mann never got to write part 2 as surely the best and most exciting parts of Krull's life was still to come, but I do not beleive I could have sat through another 350 pages of his delerious prattle.
