I recently read and loved Katherine's book Wintering, and was excited to receive a copy of this via the publisher on Netgalley. It took me a little while to feel as connected with this book (the fact that I was reading on my phone/Kindle might have had a little to do with this) but once I did, it got better and better throughout and I found myself nodding along in agreement to much of what Katherine was writing about. It is once again an incredibly personal tale, told in a relatable way. Another brilliant book - will definitely be recommending this to customers alongside Wintering.

Enchantment by Katherine May is a captivating and soul-stirring exploration of finding meaning and grounding in a world consumed by constant change and overwhelming information. Amidst the pandemic and the chaos of modern life, the author embarks on a transformative journey to reconnect with the natural world and discover a more restorative way of living.

The book delves into the author's personal struggles and her quest to rekindle the sense of wonder that often eludes us in the hustle of daily life. May's honest and introspective approach invites readers to reflect on their own lives and the need for deliberate attention and ritual to nourish the soul.

Structured around the elements - earth, water, fire, and air - the book gracefully weaves together themes of human connection, nature's power, and self-awareness. Enchantment is a beautifully written ode to wonder, urging us to embrace curiosity and experience the world with childlike awe.

Katherine May's lyrical prose and deep insights resonate long after the final page, leaving readers with a renewed sense of appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us and a desire to live more fully in each moment.

I think this is a case of a book not meeting expectations rather than it not being a good book.

Like many people, I thoroughly enjoyed her book Wintering which was part memoir, part nature writing and part personal growth self helps type stuff. So with a title that seemed similar - a magical sounding word and a tagline that seems to offer solutions to feeling frazzled - I was expecting more of the same.

What I got however was a somewhat fragmented selection of personal experiences that often gave me “I’m not like other girls” vibes and no seemingly practical advice on how to de-frazzle.

That said, I really like Katherine May’s writing style and I like how personal she is. I just with the publisher/editor would have change the title to fit what this book is rather than try to shoehorn in a follow up to Wintering.

I’ve sort of put the book down at the end feeling dissatisfied, frustrated and scratching my head at what the point in this book actually was.
