I am definitely in the minority here, but I think this book was too hyped up for me.
I really enjoyed the prologue, but the beginning of the book itself was really confusing. A lot of names and class systems were just all thrown in at once, and this confused me through most of the book. And at the end, some things are finally explained, but it was all just info-dumped. And honestly, I'm not sure if I really understood things after that either.
Besides the confusing part of this story, I did find myself enjoying Tau. I found him a bit too young and naive at the beginning, but I really enjoyed his character by the end and I am excited to see where his revenge will take him. And while Tau is the main character of this story, and pretty much every single chapter was from his point of view, there were a couple of random chapters thrown in from other character's perspectives that didn't add anything to the story. And that is a huge pet peeve of mine. It's just so unnecessary.
I did enjoy Tau's training and the friends he makes. And I also liked the magic system once I had a better grasp on it, and the overall direction that the plot seems to be leaning towards.
All in all, I don't think this book was really my thing, but I do understand why so many people are raving about it.
The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter follows Tau who becomes fixated on revenge and dedicates himself to training and war.

It’s 2023, why are we using the term “savages” in a writing? I couldn’t make it past the first chapter. I stopped halfway to research if there was anything out there where the author speaks on his choice for using this word.
Nothing direct from Evan Winter thatI could find. I know that the inspiration came from his African roots and I understand that POC were also called savages. I tried to read on from that perspective, but when the 1st chapter ended specifying that the “savages” were natives that were attempting to be wiped out in this first scene, I couldn’t stomach going further.
There are so many books out there from inclusive POC and/or queer authors that are able to pull from their personal history and culture without resulting to slurs; which is exactly what this term is for Native Americans.

Didn’t hold up to the hype. Typical/predictable male rage. No interest in finishing the series.

(4.8 more like)… but I’ve been WAITING for another 5 star read! Which this was all the way until the end… which I will talk more about in a bit. I was starting to be in a book slump from DNFing a few books that I just couldn’t get into. This book was the best medicine! It was action packed from beginning to the end. I loved the friendships, seeing our main character grow stronger, his faults, the fights, etc! Even though Tau irked my soul sometimes, I always found myself rooting for him. Great writing!!
Some cons: I wasn’t feeling the romance in this book… it just wasn’t believable to me. Especially the tub scene (I don’t even want to think about how nasty that water must have been

Last night I dreamt that I was wielding two bronze swords and attacking random horrors in my dreams.
I really enjoyed this book. I connected with the very well written characters and was able to be an active watcher in the Skirmishes.
An amazing fantasy novel which I highly recommend!
