This book was much more grounded in reality than the others of his I've read, but still just as engaging. Definitely one I will pick up again and see if I can glean another layer. A lot to say about love and death and life. He is such a gifted story teller.

I struggled to get through the first half but started to appreciate it more in the second. This is the third Murakami book I've read and I'm still fascinated by the blunt and direct way he writes and his characters that always seem slightly off-kilter. This felt a lot simpler and more straight-forward than a lot of his other books, beautiful but definitely melancholy.

The writing in this book was amazing, but I found the story to be a little bit boring at times. It goes without saying that it was incredibly sad, but it just felt like it was dragging every once and a while.

Enjoyable read.

this book was so bizarre and caught me very off guard. it was an alluring read, but also depressing, dark, lucid. i feel like this is a read that haunts you or finds you when you least expect it.

murakami has a way with words and had very memorable lines in the book.

all the characters were very unlikable (i tend to like a good unlikable character but i really didn’t like any of these people) and just very lacking in morality. also the book was a bit overt for my taste.

overall it was mostly fine, but i didn’t like the ending.

“thinking of what I had lost in the course of my life: times gone forever, friends who had died or disappeared, feelings I would never know again”

“what happens when people open their hearts?” “they get better.”

“the dead will always be dead, but we have to go on living.”

Male Japanese authors try not to make every female character absolutely insufferable challenge - impossible edition.

I read this back in 2016 and I either didn’t get it cause I was young and stupid… or it is just a weird book. Probably both idc. I recall some scenes that still make me go WHYYYY????? after 6 years
